Job overview

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our dynamic Children’s Outpatient Department.

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality, holistic care to children and their families, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the department.

This role includes both direct patient care and essential general duties, supporting the team in providing exceptional care.

We currently have two opportunities:

0.40 WTE - substantive post

0.50 WTE -  Fixed Term Contract ending 31st October 2025

Main duties of the job

The Band 5 Paediatric Staff Nurse is a key role in providing safe, effective, and family-centred care to children and young people in the outpatient department.

The nurse performs essential procedures like phlebotomy and allergy skin prick testing, adhering to evidence-based practices and Trust guidelines. They manage respiratory conditions such as asthma, offering monitoring, treatment, and support to both patients and families.

Effective communication is central to the role, ensuring children and their families are informed about clinic schedules, procedures, and care plans while offering emotional support.

The nurse maintains a child-friendly, clean, and safe environment, adhering to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols to reduce infection risks. They also support the transition from paediatric to adult services in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In leadership, the nurse acts as a senior member of the clinical team, deputising for the Senior Sister and assisting in implementing new policies and procedures to improve care.

They identify clinical risks, report incidents, and contribute to service improvements. Collaboration with consultants, administrative staff, and the multidisciplinary team is essential for coordinated patient care. 

The nurse ensures accurate documentation and follows safeguarding procedures, staying updated with child protection policies. Managing departmental resources, including stock and supplies, is part of the role, alongside supporting the Trust’s sustainability and financial goals.

Education and staff development are integral, as the nurse contributes to the induction and supervision of junior staff and students, fostering a supportive learning environment. They also engage in personal professional development through revalidation and performance reviews. 

The nurse supports the delivery of services across multiple locations, contributing to staffing and recruitment efforts to maintain safe staffing levels. They align with the Trust’s strategic objectives to improve children’s health and well-being.

Essential criteria
  • RN Child (RSCN) / RN Adult
Desirable criteria
  • Degree/Diploma in Children’s Nursing
  • EPLS
  • PILs (Paediatric Intermediate Life Support)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Child safeguarding
  • An understanding of the philosophy of paediatric care and transition of care
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of handling complaints and clinical incidents

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working in a paediatric setting
