Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to patients' lives and to be part of a platinum accredited service providing excellent patient care.

QVM is a 21 bedded community hospital providing Rehabilitation for a wide range of conditions (medical, orthopaedic, neurological, falls, frailty) in a warm and friendly environment.

You will carry a caseload of patients as part of the inpatient therapy team, guiding their assessment, treatment, and discharge planning on a 17-42 day admission pathway.

Main duties of the job

·         To undertake a significant clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience.

·         To be responsible for the supervision, education and assessment of junior staff, technical instructors and students.

·         To communicate with relevant medical and nursing staff, social workers, other health care professionals, patients, relatives and carers.

·         To actively participate in Continuous Professional Development and departmental educational and training activities.

·         To carry out accompanied home visits and unaccompanied access visits to assess the patients’ functioning in their own environment and communicate with relatives and carers regarding further care and/or treatment at home.

·         To participate in departmental audit and research as required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Occupational Therapy degree qualification
  • Attendance at post graduate course(s) in relevant field
  • Registered with HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at relevant post-graduate training courses e.g. Dementia, elderly care, frailty, stroke etc.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 1 year’s post registration experience in a broad rotational post
  • Appropriate in-patient rehabilitation experience
  • Experience of working in the community
  • Experience of complex discharge planning including access visits, home visits and equipment ordering
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising therapy assistants and/or students
  • Involvement in service development and audits

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate complex and/or sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance
  • Ability to present information accurately, written and oral, in English
  • Ability to perform specialist hands-on therapeutic interventions and moving and handling techniques
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical problem solving ability in complex cases

Essential criteria
  • Hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010)
