Job overview

We are recruiting for a Highly Specialist Orthoptist who share our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

Applications are invited for an experienced Orthoptist to take on the role of Highly Specialist Orthoptist at East and North Herts NHS Trust.

The Ophthalmology service is currently provided by 7 consultant ophthalmologists, specialising in the areas of Paediatric Ophthalmology, Medical retina, Glaucoma, Oculoplastic and Vitreoretinal surgery.

The consultants are supported by a comprehensive team of associate specialists, including junior training posts which are part of the Cambridge deanery.

The Allied Health Team is comprised of three orthoptists, seven optometrists and a team ophthalmic imaging specialist.

The Trust is actively supporting the development of extended role working for Allied Health Professionals in line with the Royal College of Ophthalmology’s Common Core Clinical Competencies Framework; the successful candidate would be instrumental in aiding the development of these roles within the orthoptic service.

Main duties of the job

To deputise for the Head Orthoptist when necessary.

To assist in the local delivery of the orthoptic service across East and North Herts Trust ensuring the service is delivered efficiently and effectively.

To provide comprehensive orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner and to prioritise own clinical caseload.

To assess, diagnose and manage patients referred to the Ophthalmology Department and to liaise with appropriate professionals.

To be responsible for the planning, implementing and reviewing of treatments for a mixed caseload, using advanced clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice.

The post will be based at New QE2 Hospital in Welwyn Garden City, but the successful candidate may also be required to provide outpatient clinics at Hertford County Hospital in Hertford and Lister Hospital in Stevenage and at our community health centres within the county.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Orthoptic qualification recognised for State Registration (Diploma or Degree)
  • State registration with the HCPC
  • Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised clinical teaching qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate extensive post qualification experience
  • Experience of assessment of patients with special educational needs
  • Clinical audit experience
  • Post graduate experience at a senior level (Specialist Orthoptist)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of clinical supervision of students
  • Previous experience of line management or mentorship
  • Experience of staff appraisal and performance management

  • Evidence of extensive orthoptic knowledge
  • Ability to assess patients and develop a comprehensive care plan
