Job overview

On offer is a part time role working 30 hours per week at a band 7 level.

This is an opportunity for an advanced practitioner to take on this specialist nursing role working as a key member within the Colorectal multidisciplinary team. The post requires vision, innovation and the ability to work across professional boundaries, underpinned by a real desire to provide the highest standards of patient care.

This post will work in collaboration with, and autonomously as part of, the Colorectal team to help develop and deliver services across organisational, professional and geographical boundaries.

This role will work closely with key areas of the Trust, forging close working relationships with the visiting consultants from the Cancer Centres, the Medical and Cancer teams and the Specialist Palliative Care team.

Main duties of the job

It is essential that you possess a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience in Colorectal procedures, Oncology or specialist Palliative Care with evidence of ongoing continuous professional development. You must be highly motivated with strong leadership and excellent communication skills. 

Working with the Cancer Management Team this post will be responsible for the implementation and assessment of the service against the National Quality Measures for colorectal cancer.

If you have not attained the aforementioned clinical knowledge, consideration will be given to appointing at Annex 21 of Band 7 on appraisal and completion of relevant educational courses.

  • Computer literate and adequate IT skills

  • Able to work autonomously and lead others at an advanced level, aware of own limitations and seeks out appropriate advice and support.
  • To work effectively in a team or alone and can also support, educate and motivate others

Aptitudes

  • Can prioritise and coordinate own work and that of junior staff.
  • Uses initiative and able to manage difficult and sensitive situations.
  • Analytic and problem solving approach

  • Advanced organisational / time management skills

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate expert verbal and non verbal communication skills and be able to impart sensitive, complex and significant news to patients and carers effectively, and to educate others in this area.
  • Excellent communicator in multi disciplinary forums and multi-professional meetings and events.

Qualifications and role specific knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse: entry on either part 1 or 12 of the NMC register, with 5 years post basic clinical experience.
  • Cancer care/palliative care/haematology specialist training/knowledge
  • Evidence of professional development relevant to the speciality.
  • To hold an ENB 998 or teaching qualification
  • To have completed specialist study at level 3. To be in the process of completing a degree or already hold a relevant degree and working at master level qualifications
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and training.
  • Mandatory training up to date.
  • A minimum of 3 years professional practice with experience in clinical haematology or oncology, with a sound knowledge of the speciality
  • To demonstrate a genuine interest in cancer care and knowledge of this speciality.
  • Accountable for own professional actions underpinned by theory and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in management, leadership.
  • Counselling certificate.
  • Advanced communication skills training/ qualification
  • To have completed relevant degree or Level 3 study and working towards masters level qualifications
  • Health promotion and education processes
  • Meet the minimum training standard set in Colorectal Operational Policy.
