Main duties of the job
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Dental Officer to join our dynamic Community Dental Service. This is a unique opportunity to provide high-quality dental care to children and adults with additional needs, including those with learning disabilities, complex medical conditions, and social vulnerabilities such as homelessness or being in care.
Working across our clinics in Bexley, Greenwich and Bromley, you will play a key role in delivering routine and preventive care, supporting outreach services, and managing treatment under sedation or general anaesthetic where required. You will also work closely with dental nurses, therapists, consultants, and external partners to ensure coordinated, patient-centred care.
As part of our team, you'll be supported in developing your clinical skills and contributing to service improvement through clinical governance, audit and peer review.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Dental Officer will provide high-quality clinical care, preventive treatment, and oral health education to children and adults with additional needs, including those with physical, learning, medical, or social vulnerabilities. The role involves working across a variety of community settings, including clinics, domiciliary visits, and outreach programmes, and may involve treatment under conscious sedation or general anaesthesia.
Key responsibilities include:

Delivering patient-centred dental care to individuals with complex needs.

Carrying out assessments, treatment planning, and dental procedures within the scope of NHS primary dental care.

Supporting the supervision and development of dental nurses and other team members.

Maintaining accurate clinical records and ensuring compliance with NHS documentation and charging procedures.

Participating in clinical governance activities such as audit, peer review, and quality improvement initiatives.

Engaging in continuing professional development to maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills.

Promoting a safe, clean, and efficient working environment, and adhering to infection control, safeguarding, and health and safety policies.

Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, external agencies, and hospital services to support integrated care pathways.

Using dental IT systems (e.g., R4/SoE) and Microsoft Office applications effectively in clinical and administrative tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
Essential criteria
- Dental qualification recognised by the GDC.
- Current registration on GDC Specialist list
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Eligible for/on a performers list
- Evidence of formal teaching
Desirable criteria
- MSc in special care or equivalent
- Certificate in Conscious Sedation
- Membership of professional societies
SPECIFIC SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Highly developed specialist knowledge of professional area underpinned by theory and expertise.
- Awareness of current national General Dental Services contract and role of a specialist within primary care (Level 2).
- Sound understanding of child/adult protection procedures.
- Comprehensive IT skills (experience using Software of Excellence or similar dental software, Microsoft Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Word).
- Advanced negotiation and problem solving skills with clients/ carers, staff and other professionals, including effective handling of complaints
- Range of patient management techniques
- To be able to evaluate the service for best practice and effective working systems.
- Candidates must provide a portfolio to demonstrate: 1) that they are fulfilling the competencies of a Band C Dentist, and 2) performing competencies above and beyond that of a Band B Dentist

Essential criteria
- Specialist in special care with demonstrable experience in GA, IHS and IV sedation
- Can demonstrate competencies in SCD to a specialist level
- Recent experience in treating patients with complex medical problems ·
- Evidence of clinical experience in area of special care dentistry
- Experience of supervising/ appraising staff, Evidence of improving service quality through clinical governance
Desirable criteria
- Wide experience of CDS/HDS/GDS
- Experience in various methods of pain and anxiety management · including iv sedation
- Specific experience in developing SCD services
- Evidence of experience of management e.g. at Senior Dental Officer level or other appropriate management experience.
- Experience of treatment planning for treatment under general anaesthesia.
- Experience of providing treatment under GA
