Job overview
The Clinical Director for Radiology provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for radiology services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, effective, and patient-centred diagnostic and interventional imaging services. Working in partnership with operational managers, radiography leaders, and multidisciplinary teams, the postholder is responsible for clinical governance, workforce leadership, service development, performance management, and the achievement of organisational objectives.
The Clinical Director leads consultant radiologists and wider radiology teams to maintain excellence in patient care, support innovation and research, and ensure compliance with national standards, regulatory requirements, and professional guidelines. They play a key role in service planning, financial stewardship, workforce development, and the implementation of new technologies and pathways that improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Main duties of the job
- Provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for radiology services
- Ensure high standards of patient safety, quality, and clinical governance
- Lead service improvement initiatives and support transformational change programmes
- Work collaboratively with operational and nursing leaders to deliver performance targets
- Support workforce planning, recruitment, retention, appraisal, and professional development
- Oversee clinical effectiveness, audit, quality improvement, and risk management activities
- Contribute to business planning, budget management, and resource allocation
- Promote research, innovation, education, and training within the department
- Ensure compliance with NHS policies, professional standards, statutory regulations, and accreditation requirements
- Represent radiology at divisional, organisational, regional, and national forums as required
- Foster strong relationships with clinical specialties and external partners to support integrated care pathways

Essential criteria
- Significant leadership experience within radiology
- Highly effective leadership skills

Desirable criteria
- Training in / understanding of quality improvement methodology
- Extensive experience of leading and directing change in clinical practice with evidence of successful outcomes
- Demonstrable experience of developing, maintaining and embedding a risk management framework and culture.
Qualifications and training
Essential criteria
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Consultant Radiologist with entry on the Specialist Register or equivalent.
Desirable criteria

Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Good understanding and demonstrable experience of working within clinical governance frameworks
- Understanding of the implications for medical staff of the modernisation agenda

- Commitment to implementation and strengthening of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
- Experience of service improvement
- Previous involvement in education & training
