Job overview

The post holder will provide care, support and information to women and their families pertaining to the Antenatal and Newborn Screening service. They will provide clinical expertise, professional direction and leadership to the multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will ensure the provision and continuing effectiveness of the Antenatal and Newborn Screening service for the Trust, in line with the National Screening Committee recommendations.

They will ensure national Antenatal and Newborn Screening targets are achieved by ongoing audit and be responsible for the development of a sensitive systematic approach to the management and counselling of women receiving screening and high risk results, or the diagnosis of an abnormality of the baby.

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Midwife with extensive midwifery experience
  • • Relevant Degree or equivalent.
  • • Assessor/mentorship course or equivalent
  • • Evidence of professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • • Has or working towards a post graduate degree / masters.
  • • Counselling qualification
  • • Knowledge of genetics.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Specialist knowledge of procedures and practices within the screening agenda underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience.
  • • Counselling skills.
  • • Knowledge of National Antenatal and Newborn Screening programme.
  • • Knowledge and an understanding of current professional issues pertaining to Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes.
  • • Effective communicator both written and verbal
  • • Ability to take managerial and professional responsibility for a ward area/team and staff.
  • • Demonstrate good leadership and organisation skills
  • • Ability to work autonomously.
Desirable criteria
  • • Has an in depth knowledge of the principles and recommendations of current professional issues.
  • • Knowledge of research methodology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • At least three years midwifery experience at Band 6.
  • • Good levels of theoretical and practical experience of management/clinical skills.
  • • Experienced in teaching students and all grades of staff in formal and informal settings.
  • Has all round midwifery experience and be skilled and experienced in all required competencies.
Desirable criteria
  • • Have experience of midwifery process
  • • Has experience of midwifery related research and/or audit.
  • • Has experience of midwifery related research and/or audit.
  • • Experience of working in Antenatal & Newborn Screening team
