Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Specialty Doctor in General Surgery on a permanent contract.

You will need to have full GMC Registration with a licence to practice to be considered for this role and have completed foundation training or have equivalent experience. Computer literacy and a good standard of written and spoken English are both essential. 

Main duties of the job

The Empress Breast Unit at Darent Valley Hospital & Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup

The unit operates out of a dedicated area – Empress Unit.  This has a waiting area with reception desk, four clinical rooms & a digital mammogram machine & ultrasound machine with facilities for Vacuum Assisted Mammotome biopsies.

The Breast Unit currently sees around 6000 new patients a year and including follow ups these numbers cross 10,000 patients.  Last year, the unit treated over 350 new cancers including around 90 screen detected breast cancers.

There are numerous training opportunities for the post holder in enhancing their knowledge and management of breast cancer, complex oncoplastic and reconstructive work, benign breast disease management, family history clinics and up to date technology such as OSNA.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to be an integral part of the Breast Unit, see both new and follow up patients in the outpatient setting and be involved in assisting and carrying out operations with all senior members.

There is also an expectation that the post holder will take part in audit activity and any research that is currently ongoing in the unit.

The post holder is expected to carry out duties across both sites as required.

The Breast Unit actively participates in research including observational studies (Bridging the Age Gap), regular audit activity and multi-centre randomised prospective trials.  The recent highlight of the work of the Breast Unit includes intra-operative analysis of sentinel lymph nodes with One Stop Nucleic acid Assay (OSNA) and the post holder will be exposed to an extensive range of complex Oncoplastic & Reconstructive work with a very progressive and up to date management of breast disease.
