Job overview

This is an exciting time for our local population, with many planned developments in Adult Medicine, innovative SDEC pathways, and Frailty, feeding into System Wide pathways. The successful candidate will be part of an enthusiastic team Physicians dedicated to providing high quality patient care.

 

Our subspecialty interests are broad and include Acute Medicine and SDEC, Acute Frailty ( both with Virtual Wards) , Stroke and HASU, Cardiology with intervention and Pacing, Respiratory Medicine with bronchoscopy and pleural procedures, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Gastroenterology with facilities for complex endoscopy, Geriatrics, Ortho-geriatrics, Renal Medicine with in/out-patient Dialysis, medical HDU and intensive Care ( under dept. of Anaesthesia). There is a comprehensive Consultant led HAHT service with dedicated registrar support.

Main duties of the job

This is a 10PA job. There is provision for five full time Consultant posts

 The post- holder will be responsible for the day to day supervision and will work collaboratively with the Team to deliver the clinical care strategy to ensure the highest quality of care for patients in all settings.

  • The post holder will provide clinical supervision to the resident/ specialty doctors with regard to day to day care of inpatients
  • Support facilitated discharge via Haht (hospital at home team)  
  • Attend relevant professional meetings and other educational activities so as to attain the necessary points to satisfy the requirements for accreditation by The Royal College of Physicians and to stay updated in the latest medical knowledge.
  • Participate in the Departments and Hospital’s Clinical Governance processes, working together with others to improve the standard of care to develop best practice.
  • The post holder will be expected to be involved in the development of all the clinical services with close liaison with colleague Consultants and the Senior Management Team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will also participate in General Medical on call rota (additional 1Pa) – this is a one in 16 rota with a weekday on call ( per month) with post take ward round the next morning, one in 16 Fridays and one in 8 weekends on average (one in 16 Sat / Sundays). The average ptwr consists of 10-15 patients.  The medical high dependency unit, ambulatory care, cardiology, respiratory, stroke, frailty and renal units are covered by the specialty Consultants over the weekends.

Education:

  • To play an active role in the induction and training of new staff.
  • To support and develop opportunities for teaching in General Medicine with Doctors and other care providers in the local hospital and community.
  • To support teams through informal teaching opportunities during ward rounds, team meetings, and multidisciplinary meetings.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 3 months of CCT
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD , or equivalent qualification

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in all aspects of GIM and SDEC
  • Experience of Multidisciplinary Team working at senior level.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients at consultant level
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates ability in managing common acute and chronic conditions, including emergencies
  • Experience of providing leadership

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates clarity in written / spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation
  • Capacity to use logical / lateral thinking to solve problems / make decisions, indicating an analytical / scientific approach
  • Ability to show leadership, make decisions, organise and motivate other team members for the benefit of patients through, for example, audit and quality improvement projects
