Job overview
This role is open to all internal staff and Kent and Medway Partnership Network Pathology staff, including those registered with our Staff Bank
North Kent Pathology Service is a joint venture between Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust and Medway Foundation NHS Trust and the post holder may be required to undertake duties at any location across North Kent Pathology Service in order to meet service needs.
The post holder will provide operational leadership and management to staff across the Blood Transfusion or Haematology services at both Darent Valley and Medway Maritime hospital sites.
They will provide leadership for service transformation, the implementation of operational and clinical innovations for the Department. They will provide line management to the Biomedical Scientists (BMS) and Health Care Support Workers (HSSWs) as well as overall management for all staff within the aligned service.
The post holder will ensure that the service runs smoothly and efficiently over the 24-hour period, ensuring the adoption and alignment to national guidance and local pathways processes and protocols. This includes drafting, implementing and reviewing departmental policies and guidelines.

They will participate in drafting, implementing and reviewing departmental policies and guidelines., ensure that the service runs smoothly and efficiently over the 24-hour period, ensure the adoption and alignment to national guidance and local pathways processes and protocols and that the service adheres to the quality standards as set out within the QMS/ Quality Manual and NKPS annual plans.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities: to include level of responsibility for:
The provision of a high quality Haematology service to all users within the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, Medway NHS Foundation Trust and PCT.
Ensuring a continuous 24/7 Haematology service at both the Darent Valley and Medway Maritime Hospitals
Ensuring that all members of staff and visitors follow departmental policies and procedures
Provide advice to users of the service as required within sphere of knowledge
Provide appropriate and relevant advice on Haematology matters when required.
The audit of standards of service and the implementation of corrective measures for those findings.
Overseeing and preparing Standard Operating Procedures to meet UKAS accreditation requirements and to meet BSH guidelines; reviewing these on a regular basis to maintain standards.

Person specification
Education and Training
Essential criteria
- FIBMS or MSc in Haematology or equivalent.
- State Registered with the Health Professions Council.
- Extensive post registration experience at a senior level with demonstrable relevant experience at a management level
- Evidence of CPD and post graduate training in specialised areas
Desirable criteria
- Diploma in Management Studies or similar, current management qualification.
- Willingness to undertake management qualification.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Extensive knowledge of all aspects of the Haematology laboratory
- Knowledge of current trends in Haematology and the requirements of UKAS
- Knowledge of current BSH guidelines
- Knowledge of the development of Pathology Networks
Experience
Essential criteria
- Managerial experience in a Haematology Department
- Extensive experience of laboratory bench work at senior level.
- Experience of out of hours working
- Experience of record keeping and report writing.
- Experience of Policy writing and preparation of Standard Operating Procedures
- Experience in staff appraisal/PDR.
- Experience of team/people management.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working across pathology Networks

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
