A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, compassionate, forward thinking and experienced Midwife to work as the Lead Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) for Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, supporting the maternity team and being an integral part of our dedicated workforce and well-being team.
We are looking for a passionate Midwife to step into the Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) lead role. 

Main duties of the job

Utilise agreed metrics to demonstrate on going added value of the role of Professional Midwifery Advocate and monitoring outcomes for staff and women e.g. whether there is a reduction in complaints by women, or improved satisfaction surveys or there is a reduction in sickness absence for midwives and improved retention of midwives
Identify, collate, analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to inform the development of reports regarding the process, impact and outcome of the PMA role and the A-EQUIP model
Be innovative and creative when determining strategies to improve quality of care and embed evidence based practice
Act as a role model by applying continuous personal improvement by using positive learning approaches and encourage others to adopt this culture
Use their understanding of personal and professional resilience and support others to develop this attribute
Supporting midwives to advocate for women
Enable midwives to be responsible and accountable for their actions and behaviours by creating a safe space to think, feel, reflect utilising the principles of RCS

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The lead PMA will utilise the 4 elements of the NHSE A-EQUIP model providing a continuous improvement process that builds upon personal and professional resilience as well as enhancing quality of care for women and families. As an integral part of the Maternity service, you will collaborate and work closely with the Governance Team, MNVP, Matrons, Recruitment and Retention, Practice Development and Preceptorship Midwives. You will provide professional advice to drive quality improvement, set up and facilitate restorative supervision sessions, liaise with and coordinate our qualified PMAs and be part of the regional and national PMA network.
The Professional Midwifery Advocate will use the A-EQUIP (Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement) approach to support all midwives to improve system performance and the experiences of midwives and women.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Qualified Professional Midwifery Advocate
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Evidence of management and leadership skills and autonomous practice
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification
  • Management course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 5 years post registration experience
  • Currently practising as a midwife
  • Previous experience as a PMA
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching/coaching experience

Knowledge and skills

Essential criteria
  • Indepth understanding of national drivers and initiatives in maternity care
  • Able to work on own initiative and in collaboration with others
  • Proven ability to make judgements involving complex facts or situations
  • Evidence of knowledge and involvement in Quality Improvement projects
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and facilitation skills
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Ability to exercise own initiative and work to deadlines
Desirable criteria
  • Counselling skills
