Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic nurse to join our dynamic team!

As a trained nurse, you will work alongside specialist nurses, consultant anaesthetists, and surgeons. We are looking for someone with excellent leadership and communication skills to lead our nursing pre-assessment team at DVH. You will also liaise with members of the multi-disciplinary team within the hospital and community settings. Previous experience as a senior Band 5 nurse or acting charge nurse in a pre-assessment department is essential.

In this role, you will be responsible for guiding and supporting your team. You will conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments for patients undergoing elective surgeries in specialties such as orthopaedics, gynaecology, general surgery, and urology.

Flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, and a willingness to rotate through all the clinics currently held are crucial for this role.

The successful applicant will be required to work across both DVH and QMH sites as per the needs of the service. 

This position will not be supported for visa sponsorship.  All applicants are expected to have valid right to work document to work in the UK when applying for this position.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 Charge Nurse, you will be responsible for the daily management of staffing and pre-operative assessment clinics for both elective day cases and inpatients. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, you will provide a comprehensive pre-operative assessment service. You are expected to work without direct supervision and assist in the training and supervision of both qualified and unqualified staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will manage and train nursing staff to assist in patient assessments and will advise and familiarise medical staff with current protocols and procedures, providing training and guidance as needed.

The post holder will be authorised (following training) to request pathology investigations, make clinical decisions based on these, and refer to medical teams as appropriate.

The post holder will liaise with pre-op consultant anaesthetists and surgical teams to optimise and determine patients' fitness for surgery.

Formulate, evaluate, and update criteria for referrals to GPs, outpatient departments to see a consultant, or admission to an acute ward in an emergency.

Establish, monitor, and maintain relevant safe professional standards of patient care within the clinical environment through an effective process of quality assurance.

Assist in formulating, reviewing, and agreeing on relevant policies and procedures for practice to meet patient and service needs.

Participate in multi-disciplinary audits.

Ensure patient information is updated regularly, providing fully informed consent using appropriate language and accurate information.

Perform ECG recordings and venepuncture on patients as required within the clinic settings.

After training, perform simple spirometry, calculate results, and refer to a pre-op consultant anaesthetist as necessary.
