Job overview

The post holder carries continuing responsibility throughout the 24 hour period for the assessment and delivery of care needs, resource management including budgets, capacity and patient pathways.

 This post also carries continuing responsibility for the management of the ward team, including development of nursing staff and teaching of students.

 They will be expected to provide professional leadership outside the ward area by actively contributing to Directorate and Trust wide nursing projects.

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered General Nurse or equivalent
  • Educated to degree level or working towards
  • Recognised mentorship course
  • Evidence of continuing clinical & professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of audit or research project.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at Band 6 ward level
  • Experience within speciality and management experience in acute or emergency setting
  • Knowledge of current nursing issues
  • Knowledge of professional responsibilities
Desirable criteria
  • Prior experience as a team leader

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Management of leadership roles and skills
  • Ability of managing change at ward/department level
  • Evidence of managing staff and dealing with difficult situations
  • Ability to prioritise own work load and that of other staff
  • Computer literate
  • Demonstrate excellent communication & interpersonal skills
  • Teaching and assessing skills
  • Competent clinical skills: male catheterisation, cannulation, phlebotomy, ILS, drug administration
