This post is one of 14 Registrars working in Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust Orthopaedic Directorate at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford.
The successful candidates will form part of a team of consisting of the 12 Consultants backed up by Speciality Doctors, Trust Grade Doctors and Specialty Registrars, appointed on the KSS Regional Training Programme. There are 7 FY2/CT trust grade junior doctors and 3 FY2 deanery junior doctors as part of the team supporting the team.
Main duties of the job
This post is important to the Trust to ensure the continuation of our excellent orthopaedic service and to meet the new QMS workload, enhance new developments and to achieve the 18-weeks target. There will be ample opportunities for you to develop your clinical experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics.
The post holder will be committed to support the Orthopaedic Consultants to meet the increasing workload, enhance new developments, undertake research & audits and support current orthopaedic service agenda. The post holder will take part in routine clinics, daily ward rounds, audit, trauma meeting and theatre sessions. There will be a requirement for the post holder to undertake duties at our QMS site.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. The clinical commitments required of the appointee will be as detailed in the weekly programme of duties though service needs may require alteration of the timetable without notice. The appointee will be required to visit any patient in any establishment forming part of the Trust at the request of the consultant and will take part in internal cover arrangements during the absence of colleagues on annual leave or study leave.
2. The appointee will be required to undertake those administrative duties
commensurate with the post.
3. So far as is consistent with proper discharge of the above duties the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.
4. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
5. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree (e.g. MSc, MD) or additional relevant qualifications.
- Membership of a relevant Royal College (e.g. MRCS) or equivalent.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 4 years' postgraduate clinical experience, including at least 2 years in Trauma & Orthopaedics or equivalent surgical specialties
- Experience working at registrar (ST3+) level or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in a UK NHS Trauma & Orthopaedic department
- Experience working on a middle-grade registrar rota.
Clinical Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Competent in the assessment and management of trauma and elective orthopaedic patients.
- Able to manage orthopaedic emergencies and provide safe peri-operative care.
- Able to undertake common orthopaedic procedures appropriate to registrar level under appropriate supervision.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in specialist orthopaedic subspecialties
- Experience supervising junior doctors.
