Job overview
Are you a dedicated and compassionate Clinical Pharmacist? Do you want the chance to help shape a new and genuinely innovative service for the women of Kent and Medway?
We're creating Kent and Medway’s first, and only, NHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for women, and are seeking a talented Clinical Pharmacist to help us deliver this vital service.
Please note that the start date for this post will be February 2026, to allow for sufficient time for onboarding, induction, and training before the anticipated arrival of the first patient in April 2026.
This role would suit pharmacists with previous mental health and hospital experience who are looking to consolidate their skills, as well as those with genuine interest in mental health from another sector. You will also have the opportunity to work across all the bedded wards in the Dartford locality.
You will be provided with opportunities for personal growth and development, including support for post-graduate qualifications in mental health pharmacy. Some of our pharmacists are qualified as independent prescribers and the opportunities to qualify and practice as prescribers will grow as our team does.
This role comes with a High Cost Area Supplement: 5% of basic salary, subject to a min. of £1303 per year and a max. of £2198 per year (divided into 12 equal amounts and paid monthly). The salary listed is inclusive of the High-Cost Area Allowance.
Main duties of the job
In this role, you will assist the Lead Clinical Pharmacist, Chief Pharmacist, and Deputy Chief Pharmacist in developing a comprehensive medicines management service to patients in the locality. Duties will include:
- Providing a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the female psychiatric intensive care unit as part of the local pharmacy team’s rotational model.
- Developing close working relationships with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and contributing to clinical care plans.
- Responding to medication-related queries, providing advice on prescribing and promoting evidence-based practice.
- Discussing medication with patients and carers and developing a variety of approaches to support informed care.
- Working closely and liaising with other pharmacy colleagues in the other localities and within the community mental health teams to ensure a high-quality medicines management and optimisation service is maintained across the Trust.
- Educating colleagues (including doctors and nurses) about medicines management and medicines optimisation.

- Masters degree in Pharmacy
- Registered with GPhC, with at least 3 years’ experience
- Post-graduate qualification in Clinical Pharmacy
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification in psychopharmacology

- Interest in working in Mental Health Services
- Knowledge of Mental Health therapeutics
- Working knowledge of National Service Frameworks for Mental Health and for Older People
- Understanding of principals of Clinical Governance
- Able to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary setting

- Experience of working on a female psychiatric ward or psychiatric intensive care unit
