We are looking to recruit a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist Haematology and Training Lead.  

The successful applicant will be required to perform a range of advanced healthcare science clinical activities and provides highly specialised advice within own Department.   You will lead a team of Healthcare Scientists and Healthcare Science Support Workers for your own work area and provide training.

This post also holds additional responsibility as a Training Lead for the Department. Travel between either sites as required with a primary base of Medway Maritime Hospital.

In partnership with Beckman Coulter UK (BCUK) our newly designed and refurbished pathology laboratory houses a range of equipment including: Beckman Coulter DxH 900 Analysers and SMS2, IL(Werfen) TOP 700 and TOP 550 coagulation analysers and Bio-Rad Variant II for Haemoglobinopathy screening

Managerial responsibility for Biomedical Scientists.

Responsible to the Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion for the delivery of Training within Haematology including management of registration portfolios, specialist portfolios and support for higher specialist and Masters.  In addition to supporting apprenticeships, work experience, Certificates of Expert Practice and other qualifications.

Managing the routine work and staff rota's of the Haematology laboratory in conjunction with the other Haematology and Blood Transfusion seniors.

Clinical responsibilities:

The post holder will oversee the following:

The provision of a high quality Haematology service to all users within the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, Medway NHS Foundation Trust and PCT.

Ensuring a continuous 24/7 Haematology service at both the Darent Valley and Medway Maritime Hospitals

There may be a requirement to work across both NKPS sites and for out of hours shift work should the need arise.

Ensuring that all members of staff and visitors follow departmental policies and procedures.

The development of the service, including participation in the Kent and Medway Pathology Network programmes.

Providing advice to users of the service as required within sphere of knowledge.

Provide appropriate and relevant advice on Haematology matters when required.

Discuss significantly abnormal results with the Consultant Haematologist and other clinicians.

Maintain good housekeeping ad analyser troubleshooting.

Maintaining adequate stocks and ensuring efficient use of reagents and consumables.

Preparing Standard Operating Procedures to meet UKAS Accreditation requirements, and to meet BSH guidelines; reviewing these on a regular basis to maintain standards.

  • FIBMS or MSc in Haematology or equivalent experience.
  • State Registered with the Health Professions Council.
  • Extensive post registration experience
  • Evidence of CPD and post graduate training in specialised areas

  • Willingness to undertake leadership training.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of current trends in haematology and the requirements of ISO 15189

  • Knowledge of current BSH guidelines

  • Knowledge and previous management of the requirements of specialist portfolios, certificates of achievements and related training documentation.
