We are recruiting for an Anatomical Pathology Technologist who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
Applications from those who are currently enrolled on the RSPH Level 3 Certificate in Healthcare Science (Anatomical Pathology Technology) and are actively working towards completion of this are welcome to apply. If successful, the candidate will be accepted onto a training Annex 21 Band 5 post until qualification.
Main duties of the job
To maintain clean and safe day-to-day running of the Mortuary Department.
The post holder will be expected to demonstrate and apply knowledge of the laws and codes of practice relating to the Mortuary and all aspects of its function, particularly those in relation to dignified management of the deceased.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring safe practices and Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to in every aspect of the department’s work, applying appropriate technical skills to facilitate post mortem activity, ensuring correct, thorough identification and management of deceased patients at all points during their time within the department.
The post holder will drive excellent standards of cleanliness of the mortuary and equipment

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Receive and store deceased patients, ensuring a safe, dignified, secure and clean environment, ensuring correct patient identification on entry to the department, performing condition checks and checking all details on the Mortuary’s electronic system correlate with patient wristbands.
To release deceased into the care of the designated Funeral Director (including from overflow stores), ensuring all patient identification checks have been met and all lawful and record keeping requirements of this process have been completed.
To undertake post mortem examinations including evisceration according to presenting pathology and pathologist preference. Recognition and reporting of abnormal findings to pathologists, and full reconstruction and cleaning of deceased after examination (this may include ACDP category 3 blood borne pathogens). This includes providing post mortem assistance for forensic cases , including occasional out of hours urgent work.
To undertake decontamination, and disinfection for equipment, instruments, ventilated tables and cut-up benches ensuring adherence to departmental safety requirements
Responsible for obtaining correct permissions for viewing of the deceased. Ensure the presentation of deceased for viewing/ identification purposes in a respectful and dignified manner with an awareness of cultural backgrounds and religious requirements. To ensure thorough and correct identification checks prior to viewings in accordance with local policy. To liaise with and accompany relatives as required
To maintain the Mortuary Quality Management System, and all works associated with this.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- RSPH Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or an equivalent Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Science (Anatomical Pathology Technology) (or enrolled on)
- A full clean UK driving licence
Desirable criteria
- AAPT membership
- Registration with Academy of Healthcare Scientists
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of documentation and processes required after death
- Knowledge and understanding of the HTA codes of practices and their practical application to mortuary work.
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office - Word/Excel/Power Point/Outlook. Familiar with Microsoft Teams, including adept keyboard skills
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of anatomical pathology work
- Experience of dealing with the bereaved with sentitivity, undertaking viewings and advising with regards death process management
- Experience in the maintenance of a Quality Management System
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of the role requirements and experience of the often distressing circumstances in which work is undertaken

Essential criteria
- Able to eviscerate with a technique appropriate to presenting pathology, based on clinical history and pathologist preference. Taking note of presenting pathology for the attention of the pathologist
- Excellent reconstruction skills following post mortem.
- General office duties such as filing, scanning, answering telephone/ email enquiries
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
