Main duties of the job

As a member of the PoCT COVID-19 testing team the post holder will participate in a 24/7 rota to deliver rapid COVID-19 testing in acute care pathways. This will include specific responsibilities for maintaining specialised  equipment, trouble shooting, reagent management, documentation, performance of internal quality control and external quality assessment programmes and supporting service users and adherence to the appropriate infection control polices.

Point-of-Care Testing (PoCT) is analytical testing that is performed near or at the site of a patient with the result leading to possible change in the treatment of the patient. Medway NHS Foundation Trust’s Diagnostic and Clinical Support Services Care Group is responsible for the service. The PoCT team are additionally responsible for the Trust's rapid Covid-19 testing service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work in accordance with, and assist in coordinating the requirements of the Trust’s PoCT policy in order to maintain high standards of patient safety relating to the use of PoCT.

Participate in a 24/7 shift pattern to perform molecular testing for Covid-19 using rapid testing platforms

Document and communicate patient results both via telephone and electronically using the Pathology Laboratory Information System (LIMS) and the bespoke ED patient management system.

To assist in the service lead with the processing  of External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes and Internal Quality Control (IQC).

To assist with document control using the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS).

Responsible for stock management for COVID-19 PoCT, including receipt of goods, rotation of stock, maintenance of records, and informing the service lead of any short dated products and short supplies so they can be ordered.

Liaise with suppliers and other Trust departments such as Clinical Engineering regarding equipment, consumables and maintenance/preventative maintenance of equipment.

Use knowledge and skills to troubleshoot equipment and minimise service downtime.

Assist in maintenance of device inventory and device fault logs.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to NVQ 3 equivalent level plus theoretical or applied training to diploma equivalent level of experience
  • Evidence of commitment to learning and professional development

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medical, and basic laboratory terminology
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures within a clinical laboratory

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office
  • Experience in providing clinical or technical services to patients/clients e.g. working in a Pathology or clinical environment providing standard diagnostic tests or advanced skills
  • Experience in manual handling of large/ heavy items

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Effective verbal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain standards of accuracy and hand to eye coordination in repetitive manual techniques
  • Ability to work in an environment where COVID-19 specimens are handled and disposed
