Main duties of the job
To be the responsible pharmacist for the development and delivery of undergraduate pharmacy placements at Medway NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with Medway School of Pharmacy providing structured training, supervision and support.
To lead on Foundation Training and act as the Education Programme Director for Trainee Pharmacists, implementing a multi-sector training programme aligned with GPhC Initial Education & Training Standards for Pharmacists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Education and Training
To be responsible for the delivery of undergraduate pharmacy placements.
To be the Education Programme Director for Foundation Trainee Pharmacists.
To be an educational supervisor for Foundation pharmacists undertaking foundation training, as appropriate.
To liaise with pharmacy staff to ensure a structured educational experience for undergraduate pharmacy placements.
To support Lead Pharmacist Education & Quality Development in implementing the Pharmacy Education Strategy
To support Lead Pharmacist Education & Quality Development to develop, deliver and evaluate training programmes for pharmacy staff.
To support on developing a structured CPD training programme for pharmacy staff.
To deputise for the Lead Pharmacist Education & Quality Development, as required.
Clinical Pharmacy Services
Promoting the safe, rational and cost effective use of medicines in accordance with the Kent and Medway Formulary recommendations and other evidence based guidelines.
To evaluate the clinical appropriateness, safety and legality of prescriptions based upon the patients’ diseases, co-morbidities and other medication and treatments taken, contacting the prescriber to make agreed changes as appropriate
Promoting efficient discharge planning inclusive of patient counselling and education.
Following procedures to reduce medicine waste and support the medicines efficiencies programme (e.g. by using patient own drugs)
Working with pharmacy and other Health Care Professionals to improve patient flow.
Answering or referring medicine information queries as appropriate.
Management and Leadership
Providing strong leadership and management ensuring that responsibilities and decision making are delegated appropriately, and that all staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities and deliver effectively.
Line-managing direct reports to include performance management, appraisals, regular one to one, objective/target setting, and personal development plans.
Undertaking coaching of staff to improve performance
Undertaking and manage formal trust HR policies e.g. disciplinary, sickness, grievance etc.
Undertaking a robust recruitment processes of staff that adhere to trust policies including review of roles/responsibilities, preparing/agreeing adverts, short listing, chairing interview panels and selecting staff.
Ensuring staff managed are fully compliant with statutory and mandatory training
Appropriately managing difficult and ambiguous problems
Providing professional leadership and support for other pharmacy services as needed.
General
To participate in the late night duties, weekend and bank holiday rotas and provide emergency duty commitment as determined by the needs of the pharmacy department.
To participate in ward pharmacy rotas and attend ward pharmacy meetings as appropriate.
To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested by the Chief Pharmacist.
To, at all times, practice in accordance with the Pharmacy Professional Standards of the General Pharmaceutical Council and undertake annual revalidation.
To maintain at all times the rules relating to patient confidentiality.
To support the Lead Pharmacist Education & Quality Development in reviewing and implementing an Education Strategy supporting the development of all staff within the pharmacy department.
To contribute to the provision of professional leadership, advice and support for pharmacy services including dispensary and pharmacy clinical services.
You will build relationships and work with internal stakeholders and external partners to support the delivery of high quality education and training for all colleagues across the pharmacy department.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Master’s degree in Pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a pharmacist
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of and ability to apply all aspects of regulatory legislation and guidelines
- Demonstrate expert knowledge covering a range of pharmacy services
- Knowledge of the requirements of the GPhC Initial education and training standards for pharmacists.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of providing support, mentoring or a leading role in aspects of education or teaching.
- Experience of managing and motivating staff, appraising and giving feedback
- Significant post registration hospital pharmacy experience (Minimum of 3 years)
- Proven experience of delivering responsibilities and objectives to time in previous posts
Skills
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates ability to identify problems, analyse root cause and propose solutions for complex problems
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to deliver lectures, workshops and formal presentations
- Be able to plan, organise and delegate appropriately and efficiently
