Applications are invited for appointment to sub-specialty training placement in Maternal Fetal Medicine ST6 in at Medway Fetal and Maternal Medicine Centre in Kent. There is only 1 post available, starting May/June 2026. 

A National Training Number (NTN) is not available for this appointment.

The post is only open to trainees who currently hold a National Training Number (NTN).

Applicant will need to apply for an OOPT from their host region in order to train in this post, bringing their National Training Number (NTN) with them. If invited to interview, applicants will need to bring a letter supporting the period of OOPT from their host region.

This is for completion of Maternal Fetal Medicine Sub Specialty competences subject to satisfactory progression.

Main duties of the job

This post is for a sub-speciality trainee in Fetal-Maternal Medicine at Medway Fetal and Maternal Medicine Centre (MFMC) at the Medway NHS Foundation Trust. The MFMC is a specialist tertiary-level Fetal Medicine Unit in the Kent and Medway maternity and neonatal 
Integrated Care System. This is a sub-speciality trainee post in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery with the aim of providing the trainee with excellent higher specialist skills in Fetal and Maternal Medicine. The successful candidate will work at the level of a senior, middle grade 
registrar at ST6/7 level primarily working in MFMC but also contributing to obstetrics and gynaecology on-call rota. This post is aimed to provide the trainee with the requisite knowledge and skills required to become a high-quality Consultant in Fetal and Maternal medicine managing high-risk pregnancies. There are ample opportunities to participate in clinical audits, quality improvement and research projects.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work in the Medway Fetal and Maternal Medicine Centre (MFMC) to learn and acquire skills for management of complex pregnancies with maternal and fetal medicine risk factors. There are dedicated clinic lists for fetal abnormalities where complex pregnancies with fetal defects are managed along with diagnostic and therapeutic fetal procedures when clinically indicated. There are a series of specialist fetal medicine clinics including fetal cardiology, multiple pregnancy, hypertension, placental disorders and preterm birth clinics. The trainee will gain knowledge and experience in management of all the above high risk pregnancy conditions. There are 3 dedicated Obstetric medicine clinics and these are led and delivered by specialist Obstetric physician and obstetricians. The candidate will also provide emergency on-call cover on the registrar rota for obstetric and gynaecology.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • MRCOG (or equivalent)
  • Completed clinical training to ST5 and be eligible for entry into advanced specialist training programme (year 6 and 7)
Desirable criteria
  • PhD, MD, BSc (or equivalent)
  • Other degrees / qualifications such as Masters / Diploma
  • Completion of RCOG Fetal Medicine / Maternal medicine ATSM or SIMs

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Not previously relinquished, released or removed from a training programme in this specialty except under exceptional circumstances.
  • Hold a National Training Number (NTN)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience at appropriate level, covering all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Completed core training
  • A proven interest in Fetal Maternal Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a tertiary obstetric unit

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
  • Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach.
Desirable criteria
  • Possess intermediate or advanced skills in obstetric ultrasound
