We are recruiting for a Consultant Paediatrician who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the  Best of Care by the Best People  and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.

*One of your referees should be the Medical Director / Chief Medical Officer of your most recent NHS employer (or their nominated deputy), or equivalent for applicants from outside of the NHS. 

For applicants from outside of the NHS, referees to validate a period of three consecutive years of employment.

For internal candidates, your referees should be your Clinical Director and Clinical Lead. 

For applicants who are still in a training post, or have completed training within the past year and have not worked in a non-training NHS role since then, a reference from EACH of your two most recent Educational Supervisors.

Main duties of the job

This post replaces a retiring consultant and is intended to support continuity of paediatric gastroenterology services; however, applicants with other complementary subspecialty interests (including neurology, cardiology or epilepsy) are encouraged to apply where this strengthens the overall skill mix of the department.

This a 10 PA role where the successful applicant will play a crucial role in supoorting current Paediatric consultant workforce  team to continue to deliver a high standard of care.

The appointee will take part in the consultant on-call rota prospective cover (1:12 weekends, 1:12 Consultant of the week, 1:12 week day overnight non-resident on call.) On-call is non-­ resident with expectation of coming in to the hospital site within 30 minutes if required outside of the periods of peak activity. All rostered presence on site is included in job planning at 3hours per PA for unsocial hours. Annual leave and study leave is granted with expectation that the Consultant swaps duties (on the on-call rota) consistent with NHS job planning guidance.

The post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director for the Children and Young People Care Group.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide acute general paediatric cover to in-patient and out-patient services (without need for neonatal service cover) consistent with RCPCH Facing the Future Standards 2025. To conduct child protection medical examination/s and prepare suitable report at the request of the Safe Guarding team. Additional PAs are already allocated for this. 
  • To provide special interest care as part of multidisciplinary team. This post will support continuity of paediatric gastroenterology services; however, applicants with other subspecialty interest that complement the existing team (for example neurology, cardiology or epilepsy) are equally welcome. 
  • By arrangement to cover colleagues during period of annual and study leave.
  • Administrative duties include those associated with the care of patients and the running of the clinical department. Help in the supervision and teaching of nursing and junior medical staff. 
  • Participate actively in quality improvement activity/ clinical audit and implement its results. 
  • The post holder will under-take, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in the emergency and unforeseen circumstances as are essential for continuity of patient care. 
  • Abiding by the clinical and corporation governance policies of the Trust. 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registation and MRCPCH membership
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Qualification such as PhD, MD and MSc
  • Completion of Paediatric spin module any specialty

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience/interest to develop skills in Paediatric subspecialty relevant to DGH service
  • Experience in leading teams and change management. Evidence of service development or pathway leadership
  • Experience in both in-patient and out-patient general paediatric management
Desirable criteria
  • Special interest or experience in paediatric gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology, epilepsy, or other complementary subspecialty areas.
  • Completion of SPIN module in Paediatric sub-specialty
  • Experience at Registrar (SpR) level in Paediatric Intensive Care, and / or Critical Care (i.e. Level 3 and 2 PCCU respectively) for minimum 6 months duration

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Current certificate in Paediatric Life Support
  • Delivery of service by out-patient clinics in general paediatrics
  • Delivery of service by participation in Consultant of the Week rota and overnight non-resident on call
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor or Simulation training by certification
  • Awareness of current Governance and Management processes
  • Awareness of morbidity and mortality issues
