Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.     To provide acute general paediatric cover to in-patient and out-patient services (without need for neonatal service cover.)

2.     To provide Paediatric Assessment Unit care as part of a multidisciplinary team

3.     By arrangement to cover colleagues during periods of annual and study leave.

4.     Administrative duties include those associated with the care of the patients and the running of the clinical department.

5.     Help in the supervision and teaching of nursing and junior medical staff

6.     Participate actively in quality improvement activity/ clinical audit and implement its results.

7.     The post-holder will undertake, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in emergency and unforeseen circumstances as are essential for continuity of patient care.

8.     Abiding by the clinical and corporation governance policies of the Trust

 

The post is a Clinical Trust Fellow at Registrar level for 6 months. The post is based at Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, Kent.

 

The post holder will participate in a 1 in 12 rota, working with colleagues to provide a comprehensive general paediatric service with no neonatal cover. The work will be based on the general paediatric ward with Level 2 Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU), and assessment unit. There will be opportunity to participate in general out patient clinics.

 

He / she will also be encouraged to be involved in and experience other aspects of the service including management and education and will be supported to attend relevant senior management and governance meetings.

 

The post holder will be allocated a paediatric Consultant at the start of the post who will provide educational supervision and mentoring.

 

Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in general paediatrics and GMC registration. NHS experience is desirable. Please note this is not MTI post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH or alternative foreign degree
  • ALS

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of NHS processes.
  • Awareness of current Governance and Management processes; in particular understanding of safety reporting, investigations, quality improvement methodology and implementation.
  • Awareness of morbidity and mortality issues; our department has twice monthly review meetings to maintain excellent clinical standards, provide team support and feedback, and to fulfil both local and national reporting mechanisms.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of 3 years in Paediatrics (at least two years in General Paediatrics) is essential
  • Experience of working in a hospital based setting post MBBS for minimum of 5 years
  • Experience of working in NHS hospital is essential.
  • Commitment to high standards of patient care in general paediatrics is essential

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills and fluency in English
  • Ability to build rapport with children and carers
  • Initiate assessment and management of sick children
  • BLS Certification
  • Team working skills are essential – our service is based on respectful and supportive team working across both medical and nursing staff.
Desirable criteria
  • APLS/ EPALS Certification - desirable but can be obtained within 2 months of being in post.
