Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for a new full time post (part-time / job share would be considered) as Consultant Chest Physician to join our friendly, progressive and enthusiastic Respiratory Team here at Medway Foundation NHS Trust. The appointees will join the nine existing Consultant Chest Physicians who provide a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Thoracic Medicine service for the Medway and Swale population of 427,000.
In 2024 we moved in to a purpose built respiratory ward with 19 Level 1 beds and a 7 bed level 1.5 Respiratory Support Unit/HDU with a dedicated 7 day/24 hour junior doctor rota, allowing us to manage sick respiratory patients needing non-invasive support (including NIV, CPAP and HFNO). We work collaboratively with our colleagues in Critical Care in managing these patients and one of our consultants is dual accredited and works across both departments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The department consists of 9 consultants, 3 Registrars from the KSS Deanery, an SAS doctor, a ward resident doctor team and a very experienced and supportive AHP team including Acute Respiratory CNSs / Physio, an ACP, an ILD Pharmacist, domiciliary ventilation CNSs and TB and lung cancer CNSs. We have a dedicated cancer MDT coordinator, respiratory and sleep physiology team, dedicated secretarial support and of course the ward nursing team supported by a Matron and Service Manager.
We also work closely with a proactive Interventional Radiology team to assess intermediate high risk PEs and treat with catheter directed lysis in selected cases.
We provide a respiratory in-reach service to the general medical take and provide a high quality, well organised, consultant led seven day respiratory service. There are a number of procedure lists including EBUS, local anaesthetic thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy and IPCs.
This post is to further develop our Respiratory Department and enable us to continue to deliver high quality services into the future.
We are looking for a Consultant with an interest in ILD or sleep and ventilation but there is flexibility to accommodate other interests and we would welcome an informal discussion.
Respiratory Medicine is part of the Medicine and Emergency Care Division. The Consultants in the Respiratory department are currently not job planned to do the weekend GIM take rota but run a respiratory weekend on-call rota – this is currently under review and there may be a small GIM contribution (weekends) in the future.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration and a license to practice
- MRCP (or equivalent)
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in respiratory medicine (general internal medicine desirable) via one of the following: 1. Certificare of completiong of training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) 2. Portfolio pathway (application must be submitted and progressing) 3. Relevant European specialist qualification (REQ) or Recognised Specialist Qualification (RSQ)
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree/diploma in relevant clinical, research, educational or managerial subject
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Competency in the management of all aspects of Respiratory Medicine.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Competency in the management of all aspects of general Respiratory Medicine and GIM
Desirable criteria
- Experience in ILD or Sleep Medicine
