Job overview
Paediatric and Special Care Community Dental Services, which includes Oral Health outreach programmes and epidemiology. Services compliment general and hospital dental services and involves multi-agency working to provide a range of quality dental services. The range of services includes Sedation, General Anaesthesia, Special Care Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Domiciliary care, Bariatric and Homeless services.
In both Kent and North East London services are provided to patients in medium secure units and in Kent only dental services are provided to prisons.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for the running of the immediate clinical environment and the immediate dental team
- Responsible for a paediatric and special care clinical caseload. This will include the provision of domiciliary care and/or working in mobile dental unit.
- Responsible for the provision of dental care at HMP sites as required by service need (Kent only)
- Undertake appropriate clinical supervision
Ensure clinical policies, protocols and SOPS are embedded and support the Practice Manager to ensure that clinical staff adhere to:
- Service delivery standards
- Clinical standards and national guidelines of relevant professional bodies
- Trust Infection Control policies and clinical guidelines.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the UK General Dental council
- Satisfactory completion of Dental Foundation Training year
Desirable criteria
- Relevant postgraduate dental qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with children and adults with special needs
- Experience of delivering treatment under inhalation sedation.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering dental care in a range of dental service settings e.g. mobile dental unit &/or domiciliary setting.
- Epidemiology fieldwork
- Experience using dental software to maintain comprehensive dental records.
- Delivery of treatment under intra-venous sedation/general anaesthesia;
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Legislation affecting Dentistry; Dental regulations, CQC requirements, HTM01-05 Infection Control and other national guidelines relevant to clinical dentistry
Skills and abilities
Essential criteria
- Enhanced clinical skills which will support the delivery of services outlined in the service specification
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
- Working with and developing the clinical team
- Delivering care to patients and communicating with their carers and families.
Desirable criteria
- Skills to provide dental care under sedation
- Communication skills required to build partnerships with stakeholders outside the immediate clinical environment
Personal attributes
Essential criteria
- Compliance with GDC standards for dental professionals, and knowledge and skills to promote these standards within the clinical team.
- Willingness to work with a variety of different patient groups
- Understanding of responsibilities with regard to issues such as poor or under performance.
- Involvement in audit, appraisal and peer review.
- Commitment to developing and maintaining relevant skills.
