Main duties of the job

The Lead Nurse for Falls Prevention is a senior member of the Corporate Nursing Team, providing professional leadership and vision to minimizing the risks of harm and management of falls incidents.  The post holder:

  • Will be the operational lead for the development of the falls service.
  • Manages and provides leadership to the Moving and Handling Advisor
  • Works as an autonomous practitioner, delivering and effectively coordinating an expert service for the prevention and management of falls.
  • Provides specialist clinical advice, and education for staff and patients requiring input who have fallen or at risk of falling.
  • Ensures that patients and their families are fully informed and supported in the management of fall incidents and the impact of treatments, which may increase their risk of falling and how to minimise the risks.
  • Leads the development of evidence based clinical practice in line with current research and guidelines
  • Liaises with the external Moving and Handling training providers and support the monitoring of this contract.
  • Establishes clear lines of communication with primary healthcare teams in order to increase knowledge and facilitate the care of this group of people discharged into the community.
  • Provides expert advice to procurement in relation to falls equipment.
  • Maintains compliance with and develops policies, procedures and guidelines pertinent to falls.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Health Care professional NMC, HPC
  • Degree level or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of ongoing and sustained CPD
Desirable criteria
  • PGCE / Diploma in education and training
  • Mentorship course (or equivalent)
  • MSc or in progress

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Clinical expert through formal qualification or specialist experience
  • Proven effective management skills/operational leadership
  • Experience in managing risk
  • Service modernisation
  • Insight and understanding of current issues in the NHS
  • National NHS agenda
  • National/local performance targets.
Desirable criteria
  • Undertaking audits and benchmarking process
  • Has knowledge of audit and research methodology.

Skills
