Consultant Physician - Interest in Geriatric Medicine & Acute Frailty

This is a post that forms part of the Trust's commitment to improve the care of acutely ill medical patients. The post is based at Maidstone Hospital but may in future also include responsibilities at Tunbridge Wells Hospital or in a Community Geriatrics role.

The primary roles are to help develop the Acute Frailty service on the Maidstone site and support the care of Geriatric in-patients on Mercer and Whatman Wards. The successful candidate would be one of fourteen geriatricians within the Trust providing a comprehensive range of secondary medical care to older patients.

Although this is a full-time post, candidates wanting to work less than full time or flexibly are welcomed.

The post is designed to improve the care of older medical patients, particularly at the beginning of an episode of illness and improve the interface between Community Geriatrics and the Acute Trust in West Kent. It will provide 6.5 DPAs of geriatric medicine with 1 DPA allocated for out of hours GIM responsibilities and 2.5 SPAs, with the understanding that this will be reviewed as the successful candidate takes on educational supervision responsibilities, leadership or research.

The main ward base will be Mercer ward, where the successful applicant will work within a team of Consultant Geriatricians. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work on the acute frailty unit based on Whatman ward. As a department we operate a ward based system within the Medical division, with dedicated medical teams on each ward. There would be opportunity for outpatient work to support the acute frailty service and post-discharge review of patients.

The Trust was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the Mid Kent Healthcare Trust and the Kent & Sussex Weald NHS Trust. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 460,000 in West Kent and North of East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population.

The Trust’s major hospitals are The Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and The Maidstone Hospital in Kent’s County Town. The Trust’s Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital. The Trust’s Chairman is Mr David Highton, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Medical Director Dr Peter Maskell. The Chief of Service for Medicine and Emergency Care is Dr Laurence Maiden. The Clinical Director for Acute & Geriatric Medicine is Dr Katy Davies. The Clinical Lead for Care of the Elderly is Dr Owen Ingram.

  1. To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility.
  2. To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.
  3. To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust’s strategic direction.
  4. To participate fully in clinical governance of the specialty covering its Trust-wide activities. To attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trust’s Guide to Job Planning unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies.
  5. To participate actively in departmental audits and QIPs, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change.
  6. To engage with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  7. To ensure at all times that you comply with the General Medical Council’s published guide “Good Medical Practice” including the Duties of a Doctor.
  8. To take personal responsibility for risk management in your work and undertake to review practices and learn from mistakes.
  9. To ensure that you respond promptly and efficiently to all complaints related to any patient care you or your staff have been involved with, assisting the Trust’s corporate responsibility to reply to complaints within a specified time frame.
  10. To ensure that you develop and maintain effective working relationships with those agencies concerned with the provision of health and social care services and those representing the interests of patients.
  11. To undertake an annual job plan review as outlined in the Trust Guide to Job Planning.
  12. You are required to take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others who may be affected by what you do while at work. You must adhere to Trust IRMER Regulations.
  13. Involvement in the development of clinical management protocols shared with the community and other consultant colleagues.

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatrics via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights
