This is a post within the Kent Oncology Centre, based at Maidstone, supporting the Acute Oncology Same Day Emergency Care (AO SDEC) to patients from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.
The post holder will be expected to support the consultant-led service across a range of tumour types. As a member of the Kent Oncology Centre there will be a commitment to participate fully in a Kent wide approach to the delivery of cancer care. This includes supporting the Outpatient Chemotherapy Team as well as, multi-disciplinary team meetings and teaching sessions.

SDEC role:
The SDEC is an assessment area attached to the Chemotherapy Unit (Charles Dickens Day Unit) where we bring Oncology patients for review by the SHO, SpR or AOS team. Patients are generally low acuity, and there are strict inclusion/exclusion criteria with regards to what the SDEC will accept.
- To cover the SDEC Monday to Friday 0900-1700 as part of the SDEC team including:
o SDEC nursing team as well as the experienced Acute Oncology team
o Named registrar present to discuss cases, review any unwell patients and support
o Dedicated Consultant support to discuss challenging cases
- Will perform an initial assessment of the patient and initiate initial management
- In low acuity cases may discharge with appropriate follow up and notification of treating Oncology team
- If any concerns to escalate appropriately, and if required arrange inpatient admission
The SDEC will offer opportunities for trainees to achieve their assessments including CBDs, Mini-CEX’s and ACAT’s. This will also be an invaluable opportunity to learn from your Registrar colleagues, and shadow them for any cases of interest. Finally, it will be a good supervised environment to develop skills in management of treatment toxicities.
