Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust are proud to own two acute hospitals. Maidstone hospital, Kent’s home oncology centre, has a wide range of complex and routine surgical and medical services and has the latest in diagnostic facilities. Tunbridge Wells Hospital is the first NHS Hospital in England to provide ensuite single rooms to all in-patients in ward environments. The hospital is seen nationally as an example of best practice in the design of patient-safe facilities and has attracted widespread international interest. It provides a range of complex and routine surgical and medical services and is a recognised Trauma Centre with state of the art facilities.
We are looking for dedicated and passionate Band 5 Registered Nurses/Practitioners to work with our Pre- Operative Assessment Team at the Maidstone Hospital site.
Main duties of the job
Do you have good communication and interpersonal skills along with an ability to work as part of a team? Are you used to liaising with a wide variety of members from the multi-disciplinary team and have a passion for improving the patient’s surgical pathway? Then this could be the role for you!
Pre-assessment Practitioners play a pivotal role in delivering safe and efficient pre-operative care by optimising patients for surgery. You will be working with the multi-disciplinary teams, including GP’s and Anaesthetists to provide effective assessment to ensure our patients and their families/carers receive excellent preparation for surgical procedures.
The Pre-operative assessment clinic has recently initiated a state of the art innovative digital preoperative assessment programme and our aim is provide all our patients with the highest standard of surgical care
Our pre-assessment nurse will play an important role in assessing patients for specialities including ENT, Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynae, Breast and Surgical procedures.

All successful applicants will be required to complete our corporate trust induction once a start date had been agreed.
Following your corporate induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First level registered nurse OR professional registered with the HCPC such as Operating Department Practitioner, Paramedic, Physiotherapist etc
- Basic Life Support provider
- Mentorship / preceptorship course or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of further education since qualification e.g. diploma or degree
- Intermediate advanced life support
- Preoperative Assessment experience
- ENB specialist Course
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience as a Band 5 in an acute setting or equivalent
- Proficient clinician and clinical role model
- Insight and understanding of current issues in nursing and the NHS
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional development
Desirable criteria
- ITU / anaesthetic / preoperative assessment experience
- Understanding of audit and benchmarking processes
