Job overview

 We are looking for 3 enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our team with a special interest in obstetrics or regional blocks. We are able to offer a number of different aspects of clinical work depending upon the applicant’s needs.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at both Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals. Maidstone Hospital has a major oncology centre Tunbridge Wells Hospital is our emergency centre, Obstetric unit and day surgery centre. They oversee provision of care for the whole of West Kent (approx. 500,000 people.)

The clinical role includes experience in colorectal, gynaeoncology, breast and urological cancer surgery, regional Anaesthesia or obstetric Anaesthesia.

The post has an on-call commitment at either Maidstone Hospital or Tunbridge Wells hospital. This can be either covering ITU or obstetrics.

Working for our organisation

The Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 760,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Around 120,000 new patients present each year to the Emergency departments.  Its major hospitals are the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital.  The Trust’s Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital.  The Trust Chair is Dr Annette Doherty, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Chief Medical Officer is Dr Sarah Mumford. The Chief Operating Officer is Mr Sarah Davis.  

Anaesthesia is part of the Critical care directorate which lies within the trusts Division of Surgery. Other directorates within the division include Trauma and Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Specialist surgeries and Head and Neck services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidates would partake in all aspects of anaesthetics in the trust including anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, regional anaesthesia, obstetrics and ICU. We would tailor your rota to meet your needs where possible. Fellows will have the opportunity to train in a wide range of regional anaesthetic techniques for upper and lower limb surgery, as well as central neuraxial and field block techniques for abdominal surgery and trauma patients.

There would also be possibilities to get involved in audit, research, education and training. The post has an on-call commitment at either covering ITU at Tunbridge wells Hospital or Maidstone Hospital. The rotas are all 1:8.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • FRCA part 1 (or equivalent medical qualification)
  • Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • Royal College of anaesthetists' Core level Training Certificate (including expected completion by time of appointment), or Confirmation of Core Level Equivalence Certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 24 months experience in Anaesthetics speciality training post, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • 6 months in another specialty eg Emergency Medicine, Acute/ General Medicine, Paediatrics or Intensive Care Medicine

Clinical Skills/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Clinical skills and knowledge appropriate for level of training and has completed an appropriate number of work place assessments or DOPS, anaes-CEX, CBDs, MSF for anaesthesia or equivalent
  • Undertaken audit or research projects in last 2 years
  • Logbook up to date
  • Awareness of limitations, seeks help appropriately
  • A provider of at least one of - ATLS/ ALS/ EPLS or similar
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor of ALS/ATLS/EPLS or similar

  • Completed NHS appraisal document for doctors in training or Royal College of Anaesthetists' Lifelong Learning Platform
