Job overview
The Department of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicine is looking to a recruit a Specialist in Anaesthesia to join our team of dedicated senior clinicians. The successful Specialist will work independently alongside Consultant colleagues to provide the highest quality of care to all of our patients. The successful candidate must have 12 years of experience since their primary qualification and at least 6 years working as an Anaesthetist. This post is based at QEQM Hospital, Margate with the opportunity to work across all three hospital sites.
Main duties of the job
You will join an established team of Consultants with several Specialists and Specialty Doctors supporting all general services of the hospital including the Emergency department, Theatres covering maternity, Gynaecology, Orthopaedic and trauma, major colorectal surgery and
preassessment.
• You will work unsupervised while in theatres.
• You will provide supervision and education of resident doctors
• Involvement in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education.
• Lead tutorials and Department meetings, in rotation with consultant colleagues
• Assessment and preparation of patients for theatre and provision of immediate postoperative
care.
• Participate in and actively present during clinical audit.
• Demonstrate evidence-based practice where appropriate.
• Undertake and participate in the appraisal process and job planning.
• Satisfy the criteria for revalidation.
• Contribute to leadership service development in areas of special interest and expertise.
• Actively participate in continuing medical education.
• Undertake personal appraisal and job-planning as part of revalidation.
• Maintain all mandatory training requirements.

Qualifications and training
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registrations and license to practice.
- Minimum of 12 years medical experience since primary medical qualification.
- Minimum of 6 years’ experience as SAS grade or equivalent in Anaesthesia.
- Provides safe and effective general and regional Anaesthesia, and procedural sedation, independently, for all patients.
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrates ability to provide safe and effective immediate care for patients of all ages.
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
- ALS, ATLS/TTM and APLS.
- Qualification in teaching (Diploma or higher)
- FRCA or an equivalent higher anaesthetic qualification.
Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 12 years medical experience (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification.
- Minimum of six years in anaesthetics in the Specialty Doctor grade or equivalent and or close SAS Grades.
- Demonstrates ability to manage patients with complex needs whilst remaining aware of their own limitations.
- Provides safe and effective care for critically ill patients with specialist help and guidance.
- Ability to lead resuscitation teams safely and transfer critically ill patients.
- Communicates effectively with patients, relatives and carers.
- Capable of working with patients to reduce the risk of surgery.
- Previous experience of working in the NHS.
Desirable criteria
- Meets the requirements of clinical / educational supervisor as defined by the GMC.
- Provide logbook evidence of obstetric anaesthesia experience and paediatric anaesthesia.
Clinical Governance

- Evidence of involvement in Audit/QI/Governance processes.
- Understanding of clinical governance system.
- Ability to lead diverse teams within all areas of the hospital.
- Understands their own leadership style and its impact on others.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships across teams.

- Critically reflects on decision making, explaining them clearly to others.
Desirable criteria
- Participates in regional and national QI projects.
- Implements evidence-based change to improve patient care.
- Undertaking QI training.
- Undertaken training in leadership/management.
