Job overview

The Anaesthetic department and the Intensive care Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital are active in audits and research and there will be plenty of opportunity to participate in Quality improvement projects and Research. Regular formal teaching sessions and journal club also form part of the learning available. Anaesthesia is provided for elective and emergency surgery in the operating theatre complex of 6 main, 3 day-surgery and 1 obstetric theatre. The CEPOD theatre and obstetric theatre are available 24 hours per day. There is a resident anaesthetic consultant for CEPOD from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays and for part of the day at weekends.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the post meet the requirements of the ST3+ Equivalent posts as detailed by the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The 2021 RCOA Anaesthetics curriculum will be followed.
It will include pre, peri and post-operative management of surgical patients, assisting with care of the patients on the ICU, and provision of assistance with resuscitation calls and acute pain queries. Travel to other sites within the Trust will have to be anticipated to allow for full teaching experience.
A logbook of the clinical cases undertaken should be recorded and an option to complete a reflective learning portfolio of their teaching activities. Annual appraisal is conducted locally through the Trust appraisal and revalidation system.
The post is for 48 hours per week.
Other responsibilities include:
Communication: This will include responsibility for and arrangement of
(i) Communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the hospital.
(ii) Communication with other hospitals.

  • Full GMC registration
  • Completed at least 2 years postgraduate anaesthetic training with CT2 level competencies or equivalent as a minimum.
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate and satisfy IAC and IACOA requirements as laid down in the RCoA Stage 1 curriculum
