Consultant in Critical Care

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

We are delighted to welcome applications for a Consultant in Critical Care to join the expanding East Kent Critical Care team at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust.

If you join our expanding department, you’ll discover a rewarding role with great scope for professional development, research and teaching, plus a fantastic lifestyle.  Our Trust is investing heavily in our Critical Care Units over the next 12 months, and we would love you to be a part of this.

When you make the move to East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust, your only regret will be that you didn’t do it sooner.  We are a community of great people providing great healthcare, improving health and lives.  Here, you can be confident of making a difference to our patients, our incredible healthcare teams and our dedicated medical students and doctors in training.

The Kent & Medway Medical School has recently opened in Canterbury. This is a game-changing opportunity and one which the two universities and Kent and Medway trusts have been working towards for several years.  Successful applicants with an interest in medical education will be supported in taking up an honorary senior lecturer post at the medical school – subject to agreement by KMMS.

Both London and the Continent are on your doorstep, with easy access to the capital, and to the Channel Ports and Channel Tunnel.

Main duties of the job

As a GMC registered Consultant, you’ll play a vital role in a progressive and forward-thinking East Kent Critical Care team. East Kent Critical Care operates across three units: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate (9beds), and the Kent and Canterbury Hospital (8 beds) and the William Harvey Hospital (expanding to 24 beds from Spring 2022). This post, including on-call commitments, is based at the QEQM Hospital, although the successful candidate will be expected to work some sessions at the Kent and Canterbury Critical Care unit as required.

Our Critical Care team boasts some exciting special interests across our three units. There’s a strong focus on critical care ultrasonography, with state-of-the-art equipment supporting focused echocardiography and bedside ultrasonography.  Our consultants include accredited CUSIC and FICE mentors, plus two FICE supervisors. We have high spec ultrasound equipment available on all units, and have recently successfully procured a brand-new state of the art echo machine as well as a cutting-edge echo and ultrasound training mannequin with training modules for transthoracic and transoesophageal echo as well as lung and abdominal ultrasound (including a COVID lung ultrasound module).

Working for our organisation

We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, with five hospitals and community clinics serving a local population of around 800,000 people. Our vision is 'great healthcare from great people'. Everything we do is guided by our values: 'People feel cared for, safe, respected and confident that we are making a difference’. We have a new way of working at East Kent Hospitals, called 'We care'. It's about empowering frontline staff to lead improvements day-to-day. We're looking for compassionate people to be part of our improvement journey for the patients, families and carers we care for every day.

Please note that if you require a Certificate of Sponsorship to work in the UK you must declare this on your application form, even if you currently have a certificate of sponsorship or a work permit for another role and are already working in the country. Please note we are only able to sponsor candidates on a Skilled Worker Visa applying for roles Band 5 and above.

Through our Family First scheme we pledge to find roles for partners of consultants offered a substantive post - For more information please visit https://www.ekhuft.nhs.uk/careers/family-first-scheme/
