Job overview

We are currently looking for ST3-ST5 Trust doctors in Gastroenterology at the QEQM Hospital. This posts is fixed term until 1st September 2026.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Gastroenterology department at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital, working alongside a dynamic and enthusiastic clinical team.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the wards within GIM and Gastroenterology.
  • Support outpatient and unit with Gastroenterology practical procedures and supervision of junior teams ascitic drain clinics.
  • To undertake outpatient clinics under supervision.
  • To have an opportunity to train in diagnostic endoscopy or continue to perform endoscopic procedures (depending on prior experience and career aspirations.)
  • Taking a complete medical history in a holistic way, with a focus on the patients’ agenda.
  • Performing a complete systems examination while maintaining the dignity of the patient.
  • Requesting and interpreting appropriate investigations including radiological tests, biochemistry and haematology tests and basic microbiological tests.
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team in patient management with a focus on effective communication.
  • Learning to prioritise tasks to enable safe and high-quality patient care
  • Supervising, training and assisting junior clinical staff when required.
  • Participating in ward rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds as timetabled.
  • Referring on to speciality inpatient teams by telephone or electronic referral system.
  • Completing discharge summaries.
  • Attending weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
  • Supervising medical students.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible for communication and liaison with other medical and service departments within the hospital and with general practitioners and other agencies, such as district nursing and Social Services.


The appointee will be expected to cover for absence of colleagues (including on call cover) at short notice, e.g. sickness. Cover outside the Rota requiring extra hours of work will be paid as additional work at nationally agreed rates and will be coordinated to be compliant with the relevant legislation.


It is expected that the post holder will play an active part in the training of junior medical staff. He/she will also be expected to supervise, educate and assist medical students.


The post holder should take an active part in clinical audit, journal club and departmental teaching sessions. Regular appraisals will occur and the post holder will be expected to take part in CPD.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBChB or MBBS
  • Experience of working at IMT3 level (or equivalent) or above
  • ALS training or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • 12 months continuous experience within the NHS
  • Full MRCP membership

  • Competence in basic clinical procedures
  • Able to prioritise time and workload
  • Confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the importance of working efficiently in a team Ability to assess, recognise and initiate management of an acutely ill patient and play an effective part in advanced life support
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of UK health systems, practices and values Awareness of current issues in NHS
  • Understands the importance and impact of information systems in health care Ability to practice evidence-based medicine
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Experience of managing patients with gastroenterological conditions as both inpatient and outpatient
  • Experience within endoscopy

Personal/professional attributes

Essential criteria
  • IELTS or OET, full English proficiency.
  • Skilled in explaining treatment options to patients and carers in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Able to establish good working relationships with patients, carers, and staff.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary setting
