Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty to join our dynamic Trauma & Orthopaedic team at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT).
 
This substantive post is designed to strengthen our growing revision arthroplasty service and support the Trust’s role as a designated Major Revision Centre (MRC) for revision knee arthroplasty. The successful applicant will contribute to our strategic aim of becoming a centre of excellence for complex lower limb reconstruction in the South East.

 

Candidates will need to show evidence of specialist training in Lower Limb arthroplasty and Revision surgery. It is desirable that the selected candidate increase the skill mix within the current unit. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and experience of treating lower limb conditions, both elective and trauma, as well as be competent in general non-specialist trauma as they will participate in the general on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties
 
• Lead & deliver a comprehensive service in revision hip & knee arthroplasty
 
• Undertake complex primary joint replacements & contribute to the general lower limb arthroplasty workload
 
• Provide inpatient &  outpatient care 
 
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for infection & complex revision planning
 
• Provide expert supervision & mentorship to orthopaedic trainees, registrars & fellows
 
On-Call Commitments
 
• Participate in the consultant trauma on-call rota based at QEQM
 
• On-call responsibilities will be supported by appropriate trauma PAs in the job plan
 
Teaching & Training
 
• Actively contribute to undergraduate & postgraduate teaching, including FRCS (Orth) preparation & regional educational programmes
 
• Provide clinical supervision & workplace-based assessments for KSS Deanery trainees
 
Research & Audit
 
• Engage in clinical audit, outcome monitoring & service evaluation
 
• Participate in or lead research relevant to arthroplasty & revision surgery, supported by academic links & research infrastructure
 
Service Development
 
• Drive pathway improvements in revision surgery, including preoperative optimisation, enhanced recovery, infection prevention & implant strategy
 
• Collaborate with procurement & theatre teams to assess & implement surgical innovations
 
• Support the Trust’s vision to establish itself as a high-volume, high-complexity revision hub for the region

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Minimum 5 years NHS Experience
  • CCT (or equivalent) in Trauma & Orthopaedics
  • Fellowship-level training in complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Strong experience in managing complex arthroplasty cases and revision scenarios
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with robotic-assisted or computer-navigated arthroplasty
  • Evidence of leadership in service development or multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc) or research experience
  • Engagement with national bodies (e.g. BOA, BHS, GIRFT, NJR committees)

Clinical/Technical Expertise

  • Strong experience in managing complex arthroplasty cases and revision scenarios
  • Able to operate within a teaching/training culture
  • Possesses range of clinical knowledge, skills & information technology expertise
