Job overview

Applications are invited for a part time Consultant in Occupational Medicine post. This post will join a growing Occupational Health team that includes nurses, occupational therapist, psychiatrist and a manual handling service supported by Business, Data and Administrative staff.  

The Consultant in Occupational Medicine will work within our team and undertake clinics and other duties Trustwide including, the Kent & Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and QEQM Hospital in Margate. There has been a move to hybrid working and consultations are mainly conducted remotely by either telephone or video. There may be times when face to face work or some peripatetic work within Kent in relation to the external contracts is required.

This role attracts a recruitment premium of £3,000. This constitutes of 1 payment; £3,000 to be paid on commencement of post, which is to be paid back pro rata (%) if your employment is terminated within 12 months of this payment being made. By signing this contract, you are agreeing to the conditions above, and you allow East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust to make necessary deductions to your salary should your employment with the trust end within 12 months of payment. This recruitment premium is only redeemable once.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be required to work at least 4 clinical sessions of Programmed Activity per month, including Supported Professional Activity (SPA) and support the supervision of trainees. The sessions can be timetabled flexibly with the successful applicant. Working in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will provide the full remit of occupational medicine assessments, providing advice to individuals and their employer in line with evidence-based practice and legal requirements.

The multi-disciplinary department is committed to achieving and sustaining high quality services, and has been SEQOHS accredited since 2013. The post offers excellent experience in providing occupational health & wellbeing services to NHS staff, and external clients including educational, local authority and small & medium sized enterprises.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • FFOM or MFOM & CCST Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date.
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Occupational Health.
Desirable criteria
  • NHS OH experience. Formal training in teaching, educational & clinical supervision and appraisal.
  • Post Graduate Degree, e.g. MD, PhD, MSc.
  • Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree.

Skills and experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for role. Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge, including the interaction of work and health. In particular, an ability to risk-assess in relation to safety-critical roles.
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Knowledge of income generation.

Clinical governance
