Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon to join the surgical department at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. 

Main duties of the job

This is a replacement post, created with the aim of maintaining the provision of Colorectal surgery  for the trust. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the emergency surgery pathways, cancer pathways & contribute to the management of routine general surgical cases such as abdominal wall and inguinal hernias. The successful appointee will also be expected to take part in the emergency on call rota for general surgery admissions as well as providing elective sessions in outpatients, theatres and endoscopy. With the arrival of a new medical school in Kent the applicant should be committed to teaching will have the opportunity to engage with future under graduate and post graduate training. The position is a whole time appointment of 11 PA’s including on-call commitment (subject to revision of job plan), however the trust will be happy to consider a 10 PA job plan if this is the wish of the appointee. The applicant will join an established team of General and Gastro-Intestinal Surgeons with sub-specialist interests working across the three hospital sites at Tunbridge Wells Hospital,  Maidstone Hospital & the newly acquired Fordcombe Hospital. 

Working for our organisation

The Trust was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the Mid Kent Healthcare Trust and the Kent & Sussex Weald NHS Trust. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 500,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some tertiary referral, specialist services to a considerably larger population (1.2 million).   Its major hospitals are the new Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital.  The Trust’s Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital.  

The Trust’s Chairman is Dr Annette Doherty, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the  Chief Medical Officer is Dr Sara Mumford.   The Chief Operating Officer is Ms Sarah Davis . 

Clinical services are organised into a number of clinical directorates.   The Clinical Director for the Surgical Directorate is Mr Haythem Ali, the General Manager is Lucinda Hill and the Head of Nursing  is Karen Mangan.   

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility.  This will include any patients referred to you and cared for by you personally or by members of your team and, in addition, any patients of consultant colleagues when you are covering on-call or for annual leave.

To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.

To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust’s strategic direction.

To participate fully in and share leadership of the clinical governance of the specialty covering its Trust-wide activities.   To attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trust’s Guide to Job planning unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies

To participate actively in departmental audits, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change.
