Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our Rehabilitation Service, at Rosebud Centre. This post will be a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Rosebud Centre is situated in Leybourne, West Malling and is one of 6 Rehabilitation Units across Kent, which provides specialist inpatient rehabilitation for individuals with complex mental health needs. The unit comprises of 10 single bedrooms and is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The multidisciplinary team provides a wide range of individualised interventions delivered by nursing, medical, psychological, occupational therapy and peer support clinicians. As a Staff Nurse, you would be the named nurse for a small caseload of clients and be expected to coordinate a recovery-focused, individualised plan of care; in addition to supporting the service users through the rehabilitation pathway.

The role includes:

Supporting the Unit Manager in the smooth running of the Unit and taking an active leadership role in running shifts.

Undertaking specialist assessments and identifying rehabilitation goals with clients who have a range of complex mental health needs.

Acting as Named Nurse to a defined caseload of clients within the Unit and working with them in a recovery-focused model to develop individualised and person-centred care plans.

Promoting effective treatment of clients through the safe management and administration of medication.

Main duties of the job

Work across a 24-hour shift pattern, 7 days a week.

Manage the shift when on duty & coordinate the workload for junior staff; delegation.

Have a good understanding of the Mental Health Act, Safeguarding frameworks & clinical documentation.

Administer & dispense medication (medication management).

Champion recovery-oriented practice, to include group work, & facilitate the therapeutic intervention programme.

Follow Health and Safety protocols & Policies.

Risk management & patient safety.

Deliver effective & quality care alongside patients.

Keep up to date with mandatory & CPD requirements (Trust Policy / NMC Revalidation).

Demonstrate good mental health assessment & intervention skills.

There is a strong commitment to supervision, training & regular appraisal, which you will receive & deliver to named staff.

Work as part of the MDT on the Unit.

Demonstrate effective communication & interpersonal skills.

Have a good knowledge of physical health monitoring & documentation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant is expected to work collaboratively within a team of registered nurses & healthcare assistants who are supported by a centralised MDT comprising of medical, psychological & occupational therapy practitioners in order to support and deliver a quality package of care. In addition, the service works closely with wider mental health & 3rd sector services in order to access opportunities for service users in the areas of work, education & leisure, so excellent communication skills are essential.

Person specification

Training, Qualifications and Registration

Essential criteria
  • Recognised professional qualification in mental health nursing
  • Registered with the NMC as a Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
  • Up to date Medication Calculations Assessment
  • Up to date Clinical Risk Assessment training
Desirable criteria
  • Completed Preceptorship
  • Evidence of personal and professional development in contemporary mental health
  • Additional Professional Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Use of formal and informal assessments and understanding of the assessment process to formulate client interventions
  • Sound understanding of the Mental Health Act and its application in an inpatient setting
  • Understanding of the CPA process
  • Experience of individual and group work
  • Provision of supervision and workload management of junior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a community setting

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Some knowledge of best practice in providing rehabilitation and recovery focused interventions to individuals experiencing complex mental health issues
  • Sound understanding of the Mental Health Act and its application in an inpatient setting
  • Knowledge in the application of relevant nursing and recovery focussed theoretical models, and approaches relevant to client group.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislative frameworks and policies relating to care e.g. Mental Capacity Act, Safeguarding, Consent to Treatment
  • An understanding and ability to apply principles of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Understanding of the impact of mental health needs on function of clients, family and carers.
  • Ability to form rapport with individuals and groups
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times, especially in complex/challenging situations.
  • Understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice
  • Ability to work autonomously and cooperatively as part of an interprofessional team, showing awareness of team dynamics
  • Ability to communicate sensitive and emotional information using a variety of mediums; being able to adapt methods/style/approach as appropriate.
  • Good knowledge and practice of IT skills
  • Willingness to work flexibly
