Job overview

Labour Ward Manager

Band 7

Permanent

We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and highly-motivated midwife for this senior leadership role. This is an exciting opportunity to join our well-established maternity unit in a role which requires someone who is very well organised, adaptable, driven, and has the ability to lead and inspire others.

The post holder will ensure the delivery of a high standard of safe, effective, personalised, and evidence-based care across the intrapartum settings. You will achieve this through effective management of staff, finances, and resources and efficient monitoring and improvement of standards.

It is vital you can demonstrate an understanding of intrapartum care/services, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a flexible approach and commitment to work.

Our most recent CQC inspection recognised our maternity unit to have an open culture and staff were proud to work for our service, felt respected, supported and valued; the recent report found our staff and services to be focused on the needs of and engage well with birthing people and the community. We are keen to continuously develop and improve, and are looking for a compassionate and focused midwifery leader to support us in our vision.

Main duties of the job

You will manage the midwifery and support staff on labour ward, which includes responsibility for managing rotas, sickness/absence, and performance, recruitment, and appraisal. You will be a key stakeholder for the development and management of individuals within the team and their accountability. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrate a passion for promoting positive team culture.

As a senior leader within the maternity services you will be an exemplary role model and work closely with the existing team of Labour Ward Coordinators, specialist midwives, midwifery managers, and maternity matrons. You are expected to undertake Maternity Manager of Day shifts to support flow through the unit and maintain an environment which is operationally safe,  effective, and well-led. Within this role you must appreciate the demands of the maternity service which can be unpredictable and challenging, and have a flexible approach to work. There will be competing demands for attention, and you will be expected to exercise excellent judgement and time management in fulfilling your role and responsibilities.

You will lead by example and empower staff to constantly develop and improve patient care.
In this role you will be visible, accessible, and provide clinical and managerial leadership on Labour Ward and will provide management support to the maternity matrons and senior leadership team.
