To supervise the policy and service implementation and the technical and scientific operations of the Blood Sciences Department and Biochemistry Service on a day to day basis enabling the provision of a high-quality Pathology service to Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, the ICBs and individual GP practices. To be an active member of the Biochemistry Supervisory Team

The post holder will be required to work as part of the 24/7 shift rota

Main duties of the job

PROFESSIONAL / TECHNICAL: 
To undertake manual and automated laboratory investigations within the Biochemistry Department  by preparing, examining and reporting on the analysis of specimens as required

To ensure that equipment is used in accordance with departmental policies and supplier’s  instructions

To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate  quality control procedures.

To lead on the supervision, training, development and competence assessment of, and act as mentor to, Biomedical Scientists, trainee Biomedical Scientists, Assistant Practitioners and MLA staff

MANAGEMENT / ADMINISTRATIVE: 

To play a lead role within the Biochemistry Department 

To supervise the day to day running of the department, allocating and prioritising workload and  resources, to ensure each section runs as efficiently as possible. 

To supervise staff and maintain the skill mix and staffing levels appropriate to the needs of the sections within the department on a day to day basis. 

To compile and manage rotas and day-to-day staffing in the department and record clearly and  accurately on the Trust electronic rostering system. 

To ensure staff maintain recognised scientific standards, and that agreed Quality Control procedures are carried out, monitored and proactively managed informing the Department Manager of any concerns.

Essential criteria
  • Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health & Care Professions Council.
  • Master Degree of equivalent experience as a Biomedical Scientist
  • training for trainer or equivalent mentoring qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science
  • Willing to pursue further qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of laboratory/hospital information and management computer systems and standard IT packages e.g. word processing and spreadsheets
  • Problem solving & Performing incidents, root cause analysis/ audits/ QMS
  • UKAS inspection, current ISO standards, Gap analysis
  • At least 3 years working with automation in Biochemistry
  • knowledge of method evaluation
  • CPD attending external/internal courses
Desirable criteria
  • working with Beckman Coulter autoanalysers/automation
  • electrophoresis and interpretation
  • Pathology IT implementation
  • Procurement processes
