JOB SUMMARY:

The cardio-respiratory investigations (CRI) unit within Tameside General Hospital provides a range of diagnostic services to the Tameside and Glossop areas.   We are looking to recruit a qualified echocardiographer (with adult BSE accreditation) to cover maternity leave until October 2026.  The successful candidate will primarily perform and interpret transthoracic echocardiography independently, including both in-patient and outpatient studies.  The physiologist will also support the cardiology team with other echo modalities and assist with training.  Experience of ambulatory monitoring and myocardial perfusion scan (MPS) would also be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Deliver a high quality Transthoracic Echo service by performing routine and advanced cardiac ultrasound examinations and formulating a full clinical report for the service user.

Providing comprehensive Echo reports to BSE standards for Transthoracic Echo based on findings and clinical history of the patient.

Perform the technical role in TOE. To optimise images of cardiac anatomy. 

 Perform echocardiography in acute/urgent setting e.g. during pericardial drain. 

Adapt studies according to initial findings, clinical indication and physical condition of patients

Provide clinical advice and highly specialist professional direction regarding criteria for Echocardiography.

React appropriately when echo results require urgent medical advice, deal with clinically high risk patients.

Provide training and support to BSE standards, for doctors and other staff learning echocardiography.  Adjusting to the needs of the learner.

Maintain own competency and personal development and upkeep professional registration

Maintaining good communications between all grades of staff within and external to the department. Clinical and technical information may be highly complex.

 Ensure accurate records of activity and practice.

Perform other duties such as analysis of ambulatory monitoring and/ or assist with MPS if appropriately qualified to do so.

Essential criteria
  • • Cardiac Physiology Degree or Equivalent or other equivalent professional academic qualifications.
  • • ILS or BLS+ Defib
  • • Full British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) adult accreditation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Extensive TTE experience post registration with evidence of continual professional development
  • • Experience of autonomous working
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of assisting with TOE, contrast and stress echo
  • • Experience of training others in echo to BSE standard
  • • Experience of other cardiac diagnostics such as analysis of 12 lead/ ambulatory ECG monitoring and MPS

Skills

  • • Highly developed specialist practical and theoretical Echocardiography knowledge/skills
  • • Demonstrable knowledge of cardiac anatomy, function and dysfunction in relation to echocardiography
