Job overview

Are you an experienced midwife looking for the next step in your leadership journey?

We are a passionate midwifery service that recognises the important role we play in supporting women and birthing people to achieve their optimal birth experience and improve outcomes.

In this role you will need to demonstrate strong clinical leadership skills.  You will work closely with the Labour Ward Manager, Inpatient Matron and Band 7 midwives, to ensure that the maternity unit is operationally safe, effective and well-led.

Within this role you will manage a team of midwives and appreciate the demands of the wider maternity service.  You will have a sound clinical knowledge and demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills.  You will ensure high standards of midwifery and obstetric led care are provided at all times, to maintain the safety of women, birthing people and their families.

In this role you will be faced with a maternity environment that is both unpredictable and challenging.  There will be competing demands for attention, and you will be expected to exercise excellent judgement in dealing with both with clinical and interpersonal challenges.

As a Labour Ward Coordinator you will be expected to be an exemplary leader who works effectively within the multi-disciplinary team, promotes safe and compassionate personalised care, and fosters a good culture. It is a expected you will participate in the Manager of the Day rota.

Main duties of the job

  • To promote an environment where safety for the mother/woman and baby is paramount.
  • To have continuing responsibility for leadership, supervision and management of midwives or nurses, students and clinical support workers ensuring delivery of a professional, efficient and cost-effective service, in the absence of the Matron.
  • To assist the Senior Management Team in the safe and effective running of the maternity unit both in and outside of office hours, including appropriate escalation to the Midwifery Manager of the Day or First On Call  Manager where required.
  • To be a professional role model for others, demonstrating competent and accountable clinical practice, forming good relationships with women and their families, and presenting a positive image at all times.
  • To share the vision of the maternity service Band 7 Team, to support patient safety and positive working relationships across all areas.
  • To challenge poor practice, with appropriate channels of support, and ultimately to instigate any necessary competency/disciplinary procedures with the Matron.
  • Provide professional midwifery leadership and expert advice to midwives and all other health professionals acting in a manner which promotes midwifery in a positive light.
  • Ensure effective, safe and responsive day to day management of the labour ward, supervising and managing all staff to maintain high standards of care.
