Consultant in Acute Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 9,500 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

Job overview

This is an outstanding opportunity for consultants to join our team of 13 Acute Physicians at the Acute Medicine Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The acute medical unit (AMU) in Blackburn was established in 1993 and has been the longest continuously operating AMU in the country.

The post-holder will actively participate in senior overview of the management of all patients in the department, with consultants present on the unit from 8:00 till 20:30 seven days a week. The Consultant Acute Physicians are supported by 6 Acute Specialty Doctors, 9 Advanced Care Practitioners, 3 Physician Associates, as well as 10 rotating junior doctors. There is a supporting medical on-call team attached to the department 24 hours a day. Out-of-hours consultant cover is provided by the on-call medical consultant. Weekend duties are 12 hours in 6 weeks. On-call overnight duties are at a frequency of 1 in 21 weekdays, and 1 in 21 weekends.

The post-holder will participate in quality improvement projects, governance duties, educational activities and departmental meetings, and will undertake administrative duties as required by the Directorate and Divisional Clinical Directors.

The appointment is full-time and there will be a requirement for flexible hours in accordance with service needs as they develop.

Main duties of the job

  • Sharing the overall responsibilities of the AMU.
  • Hands-on involvement with medical admissions ensuring the timely development of appropriate management plans of patients
  • Employing alternatives to in-patient management where clinically appropriate.
  • Supervision and co-ordination of junior doctors within the unit.
  • Helping to maintain multi-professional systems of care for common conditions.
  • Teaching and training of medical and nursing staff, both informal and formal.
  • Adherence to the clinical governance framework.

Working for our organisation

When you walk through the door, one of the first things you’ll notice is that the organisation is full of talented people. Not just in the fields of medicine, nursing or diagnostics but in every part of the organisation. Professional and committed people who are all working together in an open and supportive culture.

We don’t just look at you for who you are now; we look at you for who you could be in the future. We take training seriously and encourage you to do the same. We want staff to develop their capabilities to the full with a range of learning and development opportunities.

To enable the Trust and its employees to exceed expectations and to achieve corporate and service aims and objectives, we need to recruit, develop and retain skilled and motivated people through effective people management and development, leading to a high-performance culture.

Our main sites include the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital as well as a number of smaller community led sites.
