Applications are invited for the post of a NHS Locum Consultant in Cardiology, for a 12-month fixed term contract. This is an exciting opportunity in an area with high clinical demand.
The post will consist of 10 PAs to deliver independent cardiology services to inpatients and outpatients. The 10 PAs will be flexible but indicatively will consist of 8 to 8.5 direct clinical care (DCC) sessions and 2 to 1.5 supporting professional activities (SPA) sessions per week.
The majority of the appointee’s time will be spent on clinical duties. In addition, the appointee will be expected to take part in the formal teaching and ongoing audit programmes within the directorate as well as a full range of management duties commensurate with this role.
They will be based on the acute hospital site but will be part of a wider team supporting the care of our patients in the community both in intermediate care beds and with primary care colleagues. The post holder will be expected to take part in a Cardiologist Consultant on-call rota.
They will be expected to undertake a range of clinical duties including the daily clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of inpatients, providing immediate care to deteriorating patients including initial resuscitation where appropriate, appropriate referrals to other relevant specialist teams where indicated, and supporting safe discharge and follow up. The Cardiology Department is a part of the Medical Division which provides a full range of services to all adult patients. Dr Ravi Singh is the Clinical Director, Mrs Kathryn Thomson is the Directorate Manager (Interim) and Mr Mustafa Logde is the Deputy Directorate Manager.
We are a nationally recognised department having featured in a video made for the Royal College of Physicians Annual Conference in 2017. Our department was highlighted as one of the high performing non-surgical cardiac centres in the UK. We are one of the largest non-surgical PCI centres in the UK, a recognised centre of expertise in highly complex PCI (a live case was streamed from our cath lab during ACI 2019), the only non-tertiary centre in Lancashire offering Cardiac MRI, highest volume provider of echo services in the north west and a high volume cardiac device implantation centre. We provide the entire range of cardiology diagnostic and therapeutic services except for invasive electrophysiology.
Our inpatient and outpatient services are amongst the busiest in the UK but we are well staffed with highly competent multi-disciplinary personnel who ensure that we consistently deliver on the various targets (6 week diagnostic, 18 weeks therapeutic etc).

This job description is not intended to be exhaustive and it is likely that duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances, in discussion with the post holder. This role profile is intended to provide a broad outline of the main responsibilities only. The post holder will need to be flexible in developing the role; and also supporting cross-cover for colleagues where feasible and appropriate.
The post-holder will also be expected to participate in the Division of Medicine education and audit meetings and will be welcome to participate in available relevant audit and research.
Post-holders would be expected to gain and maintain certification in ALS, or recognised equivalents. In the case of cardiac arrests and critically ill patients, the post holder may be expected to act in a team leadership role, following appropriate life support guidelines.
In exceptional circumstances, additional duties outside normal rostered hours may be required to ensure the continuation of essential patient care. So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder will be required to deputise for absent colleagues.
A mentoring process will be in place to make sure that the professional and personal development of the post holder are maintained. The Consultants will act as mentors.
Applicants must have full GMC registration with a licence to practice training. Job plans will be finalised with post-holders on an individual basis.
