East Lancashire Hospitals are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a consultant to join our team at Royal Blackburn Hospital.  We currently have 18 Consultant Intensivists who staff the 28 bedded critical care unit.

Main duties of the job

The direct clinical care work on the 10 PA contract will initially comprise of 8.5 PAs for clinical care and 1.5 PAs of time reserved for SPA.  Of the 8.5 PA clinical activity, up to 4 PAs will be available to support clinical activity of interest to the successful candidate. We have a diverse workforce with individuals having shared roles in anaesthesia, long term ventilation, acute medicine and respiratory medicine.  The clinical activity is open to negotiation however it must support the organisations overall clinical strategy.

The critical care PAs include daytime sessions on critical care, the weekly MDT as well as on call for the ICU which currently averages out to 2.67 PAs per week.

Applicants will either be on the specialist register or be within six months of their expected date of CCT at the time of interview.

Applicants must possess the following skills:

  • Able to fully integrate within the unit, demonstrating team work and flexibility
  • Willingness to involve patients in their management
  • Able to handle difficult interviews with patient or relatives with tact and sensitivity
  • Able to communicate with and motivate colleagues, demonstrating both good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to apply knowledge and maintain competencies

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Name on Specialist Register OR within six months of obtaining a CCT at the time of the interview.
  • CCT/ CESR in Intensive Care Medicine
  • FFICM or EDIC or DICM
Desirable criteria
  • Other Higher Degree or Diploma
  • FUSIC/ FICE

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad based general experience in the care of the acute and critically ill adult, commensurate with the CCT training programmes in ICM
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist skills or experience acquired during post CCT fellowship

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the strategic and operational issues underpinning clinical governance and their application in daily practice and evidence of such
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrated involvement in risk management process.
  • Development of clinical guidelines

Audit and Quality Improvement

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in audit
  • Evidence of completed audit projects.
