Job overview
We are looking to recruit a Health Care Assistant on our Ambulatory Emergency care unit (SDEC) currently based on Ward B3.
This is a service that has been developed to provide acute assessment diagnostics and treatment for patients. Using the principles of same day emergency care (SDEC). We support flow of patients through the hospital thereby improving the four hour standard and improving patient experience.
Our service SDEC is open everyday that takes referrals from ED/UCC, GP's and other multidisciplinary teams within primary and secondary care settings. We are open 24 hours a day, with acute medical support.
We are looking for candidates with good interpersonal, communication and organisational. Previous care experience is also desirable ideally gained in a healthcare environment. In house training will be provided. It is essential that the successful applicant is committed to professional development and has the ability to work as part of a team and independently using their own initiative.
The type of candidate we are looking for needs to be dynamic, motivated and enthusiastic and be committed to providing care to an excellent standard, open to change in order that we continually improve.
Patients are the most important part of our work and caring for them to a high standard in a caring and safe environment is paramount.
Main duties of the job
Working alongside a trained nurse to deliver safe, personal and effective care is the main responsibility but an enthusiasm to develop yourself within the role is desirable. Further knowledge of basic life support, physiological measurement recording, safer handling and equality and diversity are all areas in which training can be provided for the successful candidate. There will also be an opportunity to further develop your knowledge with learning skills like venepuncture and cannulation.
The role will involve assisting the patients with their daily activities of living, washing, dressing, nutrition, hygiene, etc to maintain an excellent standard of patient care.
You will be required to work on a rotational basis with night shifts included.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
a) Assist nursing staff with the admission and discharge process of patients - appropriate duties may include listing of clothing and assistance with dressing and undressing.
b) Contribute to the welcoming of patients/relatives when they arrive on the ward; ensuring appropriate staff are alerted to their presence and needs.
c) Weigh patients and chart weight.
d) Assist with making occupied beds and strip and clean unoccupied beds, according to control of infection policies.
e) Help patients to prepare for meals and assist in the service of meals. Serve refreshments and simple diets, where appropriate.
f) Help with the feeding of patients in all age groups, including patients with disabilities.
g) Assist with bathing in bed and in the bathroom, with turning and moving of patients, including the use of mechanical aids and bed appliances.
h) If required, help patients with personal hygiene, including care of hair, teeth and nails and under supervision, assist with oral hygiene of conscious patients.
i) Assist in the care of pressure areas and the care of the incontinent patient.
j) Participate in the general care of patients in hospital e.g., dressing, undressing, taking to the toilet and using sani-chairs and commodes.
k) Participate in giving and/or removing toilet utensils.
l) Care of sanitary utensils, including disinfection of baths, bins and commodes after use and the disinfection of beds and lockers according to hospital policy.
m) Be responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical areas, including waiting areas, stock rooms and patient areas.
n) Assist nursing staff with effective stock control and cost effectiveness via on-line ordering.
o) Answer telephone, take, and record/ transmit messages to qualified staff.
p) Carry out errands between wards/departments, including the collection and delivery of specimens to the laboratory
q) Assist with movement of patients to other wards, clinics or departments by either walking them or with the patients in chairs or trolleys/beds, and undertake chaperon and escort duties.
r) Help patients with the care of their personal belongings.
s) Report to the person in charge, all observations made of the patient.
t) In the absence of the Ward Secretary enter patient information on a computerised Patient Administration System (P.A.S.), and perform general office duties e.g. filing, photocopying and use of facsimile.
u) Participate in ward meetings
