Job overview

The OMFS H&N team in ELHT is looking to appoint a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial H&N Surgeon, with an interest in Head and Neck Cancer ablation and reconstruction, and TMJ. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, diverse, and motivated team of clinicians, with national/international reputation and an established practice based on quality of outcomes. The local demand for OMFS H&N surgery makes the unit one of the busiest in the Northwest. The successful candidate will be a core member of the dedicated weekly Lancashire & South Cumbria H&N MDT which covers a population of over 2.5M patients

Main duties of the job

We wish to appoint a Consultant with a special interest in Head and Neck and TMJ. This post within the department to support with the delivery of our cancer service across Head and Neck. 
It is envisaged that the successful applicant will also offer general Oral & Maxillofacial services to the Trust and develop other interests mutually acceptable to the successful applicants and the department.
The three B’s is a geographical area covering the towns of Bolton, Burnley and Blackburn. The population serviced is approximately 1 million. The Maxillofacial inpatients and Trauma work are based at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital site. Outpatient and Daycase surgery is
carried out at all three hospital sites. The service is currently delivered by a team of eight Consultants in Maxillofacial Surgery, one of whom is part time, so these appointments indicate an expansion of the consultant establishment.

Working for our organisation

The ELHT OMFS H&N service covers a geographical area including the towns of Bolton, Burnley, and Blackburn. We offer services to a population of approximately 1 million .

Outpatient clinics and Day Case surgery is carried out at all three hospital sites.

All inpatient work, including major H&N surgery is carried out at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital site, with a support from a dedicated surgical ICU. We proud ourselves for continuing an uninterrupted H&N cancer service throughout the covid pandemic and having an established and standardised patient ERAS H&N pathway. The OMFS H&N team works closely with the ENT H&N team in ELHT, with mutual support and operating jointly when required.

We employ over 8,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work and achievements.

This post is subject to the New Consultant Contract 2003.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will undertake their clinical commitments across Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Hospital.

The post holder will take part in the consultant on call rota. It is envisaged that the post holder will develop a subspecialty interest to complement those of the existing consultants. A proposed job plan for the post is attached and will be agreed with the Consultant within 3 months of commencement of the post.

The team has close links with the University of Central Lancashire and a strong presence in national/international committees , with research publications, invited lectures and participation in clinical trials. The successful applicants will be encouraged to participate in education, research, and innovation and will be supported in developing novel services for patient’s benefits.

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC & GDC
  • CCST or equivalent/ Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery FRCS (OMFS)
  • Research Experience
  • MBChB or equivalent BDS or equivalent
  • Research experience
  • Recognised as medical educator
Desirable criteria
  • Surgical prizes
  • Master’s/MD/PhD
  • Formal teaching qualification
  • Post CCT Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery

Training
