Senior Clinical Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 9,500 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow to join our department from August 2026 for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension.

This is a full-time position with an on-call commitment, offering an excellent opportunity for an experienced surgeon to further develop their skills within a supportive team environment.

The post is ideally suited to a surgeon who has completed Orthopaedic training and is working towards completion of the FRCS (Orth) examination.

Clinical sessions will be undertaken across both Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital, providing a broad range of clinical exposure.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in the T&O department, gaining experience from working with multiple consultants of various subspecialties including upper limb, lower limb, paediatrics and foot and ankle.

There will be an opportunity to practice independently based on competency levels. The post holder will attend both elective orthopaedic and fracture clinics and operate on elective and trauma patients.

Working for our organisation

The department provides a general Orthopaedic and acute trauma service to the population of East Lancashire.

Trauma services for the local population are provided on the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital site. Elective surgery is provided on the Burnley General Teaching Hospital site.

Outpatient clinics are based at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. Peripheral Orthopaedic clinics are held in Rossendale, Pendle, Clitheroe and Accrington.

  2. Actively participate in clinical and service activities, contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of services to maintain and enhance patient care across the Trust.
  3. Work collaboratively with medical, professional, and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
  4. Participate fully in, and share responsibility for, the clinical governance framework of the specialty, ensuring high standards of care across all Trust-wide activities.
  5. Engage actively in departmental audit programmes, contributing to the coordination of audit activity and the implementation of service improvements.
  6. Take an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate education, including teaching, training, and supervision of junior staff.
  7. Assist in the management, supervision, and professional development of junior medical staff within the department.
