BOFAS Foot & Ankle Fellow
NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor
At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care. We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 9,500 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.
Job overview
Applications are invited for a 12-month BOFAS Foot & Ankle Fellowship at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is a full-time post (10 PAs), aimed at peri-CCT Orthopaedic trainees who are within 6–12 months of completion of higher surgical training, or who have recently achieved CCT, and have obtained or are nearing completion of the FRCS (Tr & Orth).
The successful candidate will work alongside three experienced Foot & Ankle consultants:
• Mr Ravi Jugdey
• Mr Shiv Aithal
• Mr Aamir Zubairy
The fellowship offers direct consultant mentorship with exposure to a wide range of complex foot and ankle pathology, with over 600 foot and ankle procedures performed annually across elective and trauma practice. This provides excellent operative exposure across the full spectrum of foot and ankle surgery.
Main duties of the job
This fellowship provides advanced subspecialty training in Foot & Ankle Surgery, offering extensive exposure to both elective and trauma cases in a high-volume district general hospital setting. The post is structured to provide the clinical, operative and decision-making experience required to transition confidently into consultant practice.
The post is designed to provide progressive operative independence, with increasing autonomy based on competency and performance.
Working for our organisation
Trauma services are based at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, with elective orthopaedic services at Burnley General Teaching Hospital.
The Trust serves a population of over 600,000 and provides a busy acute trauma service with a large and varied operative workload. Peripheral orthopaedic clinics are also delivered in Rossendale, Pendle, Clitheroe and Accrington.
The wider orthopaedic department includes specialist upper limb, lower limb, paediatric and trauma services, providing a strong multidisciplinary training environment.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Attend elective and trauma operating lists across both sites
• Participate in specialist Foot & Ankle outpatient clinics
• Manage acute trauma and fracture clinic patients
• Develop operative skills across a wide range of foot and ankle procedures
• Engage in departmental teaching, audit and governance
• Contribute to research and national/international presentations where appropriate
The fellowship can be tailored to align with the successful candidate’s training needs and career aspirations.
