Job overview
We are looking to recruit a keen and enthusiastic Ward Clerk to join our dynamic team on B18 Digestive disease unit at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
We are 26 bedded fast-paced unit specialising in complex digestive disease and general medical conditions. We work to provide seamless care for our patients and their families. We always promote to act in a manner that upholds the Trust values working as part of the ward team to ensure that patients and relatives receive Safe, Personal & Effective care.
Main duties of the job
- Reception duties to advise and direct all patients and visitors to the department.
- Open and distribute mail to relevant areas.
- General office duties e.g., filing, photocopying, faxing
- Ordering and maintenance of stationary stock levels
- Receive and sign for all deliveries to the department and inform relevant personnel.
- Answer internal and external telephone enquiries and redirect messages to appropriate personnel. This includes dealing with sensitive and confidential information and distressed clients / clients with special needs on a regular basis.
- Checks and enters patient details onto hospital system.
- Input patient details into electronic systems and print off reports as required.
- Copy typing for senior nursing staff as requested.
- Liaise with medical records/Waiting List office/Consultants/ GP’s / X-ray etc.
- Ensure patients on the Unit, checking details/ patient information for accuracy as required.
- Pleasantly greet patients, relatives and visitors to the Unit, including clients with special needs
- Compilation of admission packs and patient folders/charts Exchange information with patients, relatives and staff on admission, transfer and discharge including distressed clients, clients with cultural/language differences and clients with special needs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

prioritizing work and solving problems relating to medical records.

Liaising with Senior Nurse on a regular basis.

To assist other clerical staff at all units within the directorate as requested by the matron/operational manager or unit manager, including during annual leave and absence etc.

Work flexibly in order to ensure the needs of the service are met, including flexing hours during annual leave and absence etc.

Return notes to relevant secretary / medical records.

Advise patients / relatives on how to make a complaint and re direct to senior nurse.

Make clinic appointments as necessary.

Liaise with ambulance control and book patient transport as necessary.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- IT Skills
- Knowlegde and skills clear accurate written and verbal communication. Able to listen effectively.
- Personal attributes Proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures.
- Demonstrate an ability to manage priorities under pressure.
- Good organisation skills
- Proven ability to adapt to change
- Ability to use own initiative and work without close supervision.
- Proven the ability to maintain confidentiality
Desirable criteria
- Good working knowledge of electronic and other hospital systems
- Previous experience in health care settings
- Experience 12 month clerical experience
- GCSE English Language, or equivalent
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
