Emergency Department Patient Flow Assistant

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Emergency Department team as a Patient Flow Assistant.

The role supports the Nurse and Consultant in Charge with the safe and timely flow of patients through the department.

This is a full time position and the team cover a 24/7 period so please ensure you are able to work a variety of shifts before applying.

 

 

Main duties of the job

Working in support of and under the direction of the Emergency Department Nurse in Charge, they will assist in the monitoring and management of patient flow through the department. The post holder will be responsible for timely and effective management of departmental administrative duties.

Main Duties:

  • Ensure that there are up to date plans for all patients > 2 hours.
  • Ensure that clerking is up to date in real time.
  • Cross reference all patients in the Emergency Department to ensure that all referred patients are on the tracker.
  • Accurately input the Bed Booked times.
  • Ensure referral times to specialties and specialty outcomes are recorded accurately.
  • Ensure coding is completed by a clinician prior to discharge and the patient is removed.
  • Gather information prior to each safety huddle and complete the template accurately.
  • Monitor and escalate IPS breaches to area leads/clinical staff/nurse in charge and work to support achievement of IPS.
  • Liaise with Diagnostic Services.
  • Follow up and highlight available clinical reports to clinician/nurse such as CT reports and Lab results.
  • Book porters for patient transfers.
  • Answer the phone and under the direction of the nurse in charge, respond to or redirect calls as appropriate.
  • Contribute towards creating a high performance, continuously improving environment by being proactive in identifying patient pathway delays and highlighting to the necessary team.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of education including 5 GCSE/Equivalent.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Evidence of ongoing personal development
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or IT qualification

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • General administrative experience
  • Experience of dealing with members of the public face to face and over the telephone.
Desirable criteria
  • Hospital IT systems experience.
  • Knowledge of Trust and Departmental NHS Targets.
  • Medical terminology.
  • Familiarity of the emergency department Electronic Patient Record system.

SKILLS AND ABILITY

Essential criteria
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise work.
  • Ability to follow a procedure / instruction and feedback to senior staff.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to remain calm when the department is experiencing extreme pressures.
